MAORI WAR CANOES

INVITATION TO AUSTRALIA 150TH ANNIVERSARY CARNIVAL ‘From Our Own Correspondent» SYDNEY, Sept. 24. Maori War canoes will probably be a feature of the harbour carnival during the 150th anniversary celebrations in Sydney in 1938. The Minister in charge of the celebrations (Mr Dunningham) said that he had written to Sir Apirana Ngata suggesting that a war canoe, or canoes, manned by Maoris in fighting dress, should be sent to Sydney. It was thought that the appearance of these picturesque craft and their crews in races on the harbour during the aquatic carnival, as well as on shore, would greatly enhance the spectacular effect which was aimed at in the organisation. The Minister has pointed out that as New Zealand will celebrate its centenary in 1940, the proposed gesture by the Dominion for 1938 might be reciprocated. The Premier of New South Wales (Mr Stevens) during his stay in Auckland next week will give publicity to the organisation for the 1938 celebrations.
