THE CROCKERY TRADE
A SUBSTANTIAL REDUCTION COMBATING JAPANESE COMPETITION DECISION OF MANUFACTURERS (Special to Daily Times) AUCKLAND, Sept. 29. What is described as a determined effort to meet Japanese competition is the action of five large English manufacturers in increasing their discounts on white dinner and tea crockery to Australian and New Zealand importers to an extent that represents a drop in price of about 10 per cent. This action, of which advice has just been received in Auckland, has been taken in the face of rising wages and dearer material. Indeed, the prices of crockery in England are actually advancing. Apparently the drop in price to the New Zealand and Australian trade was determined by the English Pottery Association which has been concerning itself with the problem of retaining the markets that are menaced by Japan. Recently it reduced the prices in South America.
It is only white dinner and tea crockery that is considered to be menaced by Japanese competition in New Zealand and Australia, and it is stated that the reduction is on this class of crockery only.
