LOCAL GOVERNMENT

AMALGAMATIONS FAVOURED RIDING SYSTEM CONDEMNED (Per United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, August 19. "These confounded ridings are nothing but a nuisance, and if I had my way I would wipe them out," said the Minister of Public Works (Mr R. Semple), replying to a deputation yesterday, when it was pointed out to him that some ridings of a county supported the scheme under discussion while other ridings would not help financially, because they thought that direct benefits would not extend to them. "They are a thing of the past—of the Stone Age. They pay different rates, and have practically no co-ord-ination—silly, eh? " Mr Semple said. This condemnation of the ridings system was made to three of the four deputations heard by the Minister yesterday afternoon. The Minister also referred to the large number of county councils in New Zealand, remarking that there were far too many. The Government, he said, was going to encourage amalgamation where it was desirable, though the legislation would be in no sense arbitrary. Machinery would be provided, and results would come in due course.
