NOTES ON THE RACING (From Our Special Reporter) CHRISTCHURCH, Aufust 14. The Metropolitan Trotting Club's meeting was concluded in fine weather and attracted a large attendance, which increased during the afternoon. The track was in fast order and it became necessary to bring the water carts into action to lay the dust. A most notable feature of the meeting consisted in the fact that the totalisator on the final day was shut on the concluding race sharp on time, probably for the first time in the history of Addington. The promptness cost the club a good deal of money, but it taught investors a lesson, and in future those with an idea of backing a winner will not delay in making a bet. The Midwinter Handicap provided a stirring finish between the first five. While Ihe field got away from a good start, about half of it went to a break in the first furlong. After going a lap ' Rustle was leading Little Reta, Resound, Mataunga and Isobel Patch. The leadership was much about the same until inside the final half-mile, when Norman Fox ran up to the leaders. Resound broke two furlongs from home and Rustle led into the straight with Mataunga, Little Reta, Isobel Patch and Norman Fox in close attendance, and they were well clear of the rest of the field. In a fine finish home Mataunga beat Rustle by a short neck, who was a head in front of Little Reta. who broke a stride from the post. Norman Fox was right in line with the placed lot. tt The field for the Lightning Handicap went off well and raced in close order throughout the journey. After going I a lap Broughshane had Gallant Knight on his wheel, with Greenmantle, Blair Athol and Full Hand in close attendance. The leadership remained unchanged along the back. Blair Athol broke after rounding the far turn and Stirling Lady moved up as they approached the home turn. Gallant Knight headed Broughshane after they straightened for home and looked a winner but Greenmantle finished a brilliant run by winning by half a length from Happy Knight, who was second last three furlones from home. Stirling Lady was a neck away third, just beating Broughshane and Gallant Knight, and then righ' up with them were Kibo and Full Hand. De Soto won the National Handicap under difficulties. Sure was running second to Vesuvius before going the first quarter when she broke and came back on De Sotc and cost him several lengths Vesuvius led past the stand from Llewellyn's Pride. Rey Spec Tempest and Willow Wave The order of leadership was unchanged over the next circuit, with a packed field, and De Soto racing on the outside Once inside the last half mile De Soto raced up and reached the front before reaching the far turn He was four lengths clear when racing to tne home turn and Harold Logan raced up on the outside Once in the straight De Soto kept clear and won well by three length? from Llewellyns Pride, with Tempest a head away third with Rey Spec and Harold Logan right up with the third horse, and then came Sunnv Morn and Graham Direct. De Soto comes under the limelight as one sure to win a big race or two during the season. .. Only five went to .he post for the Federal Handicap. Bonny Azure skipped as they went away, and reporter took charge and led out from Bonny Azure Gamble broke badly before going two furlongs Reporter lee past the stand from Bonny Azure Gamble and Francis Lincoln They ran in the order nam ?d all the way. Coming round the top Reporter drew out and pulled out more speed than anticipated beating Grand Mogul by ove-a length Bonny Azure was six lengths away and Francis Lincoln finished a moderate fourth The winner is credited with travelling a final quarSr in 31sec Grand Mogul appeared to be handled with too much confld Waress oroke up at the start of the Heathcote Handicap R ° ck L A w led out and set the pace to suit herself, and the opposition could, not seriously challenge her at the business end. Craganour ran into second place when seven furlongs from home but did not last long. Raydus stayed on better than Aristotle, Young Frank, Bingen Palm and Grace M'Elwyn. who were the early leaders following Rocks New Metford, Discord and Air Flow, broke after they moved away in the Addington Handicap. Guy o Mine and Norma Bingen made the pace and at the end of a lap were followed by Air Flow and Wrackler. Sea Gift was moving up when she put in a break three furloncs and a-half from home, but soon causht back to her gait Guy o' Mine and Norma Binf?en led round the top and the latter looked a winner as thev straightened for home. Wrackler finished on well under pressure and Sea Gift arrived on the scone. A fine finish home resulted in Wrackler beating Sea Gift bv half a length Norma Biiven was a awav third Discord nut up a remarkable performance after breaking bv Owning two len'f'ths awav from the third horse. with New Metford close up. The Islington Handicap was marked bv an unfortunate accident just as an exciting finish was takine place less than 100 yards from home. Rongomai came with a challenge in the straight and was lust on the point of heading

Pot Luck when she fell and brought down Plain Pearl, and then Isobel Derby drove into the fallen horses and sulkies, and her driver. J. J. Kennerley, was flung high in the air to get a nasty-looking fall Kennerley was removed to the hospital. Marie Celeste, who was fourth at the home turn won bv a length from Golden Cross, who beat Pot Luck by two lengths, and Subsidy was next. Kennerley escaped with concussion, and his condition is not regarded as serious Cloudy Range reached the front in the Farewell Handicap after going about two furlongs, when he drew out from Supertax and Rey Spec, who were followed by Vesuvius From that on Cloudy Range led the way and finally won bv a length and a-half from Rey Spec, who beat Gold Tinge by half a length. Raydus was a head away fourth, followed by Blue Mountain and Sunny Morn. Throughout the meeting Mr A. J. Hastings got all the fields away from a flat-foot start and did consistently good work.

GRAND NATIONAL .MEETING PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY (From Our Special Reporter) CHRISTCHURCH, August 14. Hunt Nominations Nominations for the Otago Hunt Club's meeting are due on Friday. May Start at Wingatui The Acre gelding Santoft has been purchased by Messrs W. H. and W. D. Orbell, and is likely to carry their colours at the Otago Hunt meeting next month. Improvement Probable Burglar was travelling well when he ran off in the Hunt Cup. He may redeem himself in favour in the Aylesbury Steeples. Suited by the Distance Autumn Wind will be suited by the six furlongs in the Longbeach Handicap He would have been hard to beat in the Woolston Handicap a furlong from home One to Remember Emmeline Girl is expected in some quarters to improve on previous form if saddled up for the Longbeach Handicap. Weaker Opposition Epic drew an outside number in the Papanui Handicap, and will not be up against such strong opposition in the Longbeach Handicap. Strongly Supported Rousseau was strongly supported for the Woolston Handicap, in which he was hopelessly left. He may do better in the Longbeach Handicap if money means merit A Probable Favourite Ponty is in the Heathcote Handicap and Selwyn Handicap. He will probably start favourite in the selected race, and in both if saddled up Iwice.. Performances Were Promising Irish Comet, who figures in the Pakuranga Hunt Cup has had some previous experience over the steeplechase fences at Ellerslic. At the last Great Northern meeting he finished second to Tangled in the Hunt '.,lub Cup. and three days later was runnerup to Forest. Glow in the Winter Steeplechase. These performances were distinctly promising, and if Irish Comet is capable of reproducing that form in the Pakuranga Hunt Cup he will be very troublesome.

Point-to-Point Meetiiiß The Otago Hunt Club's point-to-point steeplechase meeting will be held at North Taieri next Saturday. A most attractive card of six events lias been framed, and entries are due on Monday. There are three jumping events and three on the flat. Disappointed Her Backers Queen of Song has disappointed her admirers in both her races at the Grand National fixture. In the Islington Handicap she looked 9to be 'Jfoing comfortably within striking distance of the field five furlongs from home, but she did not unwind her customary finishing run from that point. However, Travenna crowded on the pace, and 10.6 was a big load under which to make up ground. Showed Ability Last Season When raced over hurdles last season, Kaeewhip displayed a fair amount of promise, his best effort being his second to Master Musk at the Te Aroha meeting. He also ran third in the Kaimai Hurdles at the Bay of Plenty meeting held at Tauranga last March. Racewhip claims an engagement in the Harris Memorial Hurdle Race at the Pakuranga meeting, and if started should have good prospects. A Speedy Filly After winning three races on end during the autumn meetings, Sergia was eased up for a time, but is due to reappear at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting. She is a speedy filly who has already proved her ability to run out a mile successfully. Therefore, a longer distance may not be beyond the daughter of Lord Qucx this season Numbers on Saddle Cloths A suggestion was made by Mr C. E. Majoi at the annual meeting of the Auckland Racing Club on Tuesday that the number cloths on the horses should be made considerably larger. He stated that at present patrons who were getting on in years found it difficult to tell the numbers, and he thought i: would be a step in the right direclion. Gloucester Cup Winner The Gloucester Cup winner Shy had previously shown ability to handle weight. At Ellerslie, in June, he won the Carbine Plate, and was awarded 10.2 in a hack race on the final day. Since then Shy, who is by the Waimate horse Valkynan, had lost condition and had been able to do only light work, but he proved much too good for the opposition on Thursday. He was ridden by Mr C. Jones, of Manawatu, who was on him when he won at Ellerslie.

Fine Display of Jumping Manawatu, whose owner (Mr F. Armstrong) is in the East, gave a fine display of jumping in the Beaufort Steeplechase and gave the veteran horseman A. M'Donald a good ride. Billy Boy was beaten for second place by Pahu, who was kept closer up than usual in the early stages, but the old fellow enhanced his reputation as a " Riccarton" performer and will be hard to beat in the Lincoln to-day.

TROTTING NOTES

By Sentinel

NOTICE TO CORRESPONDENT Wager.—Win and place, Red Shadow being first favourite each way. De Soto's Performances De Soto has won 12 races within the last 10 months and over £2600 in prize money. Betting System At the Cambridge meeting the betting will be conducted on the win-and-place system. Looks Well Placed After her splendid form at the Auckland winter meeting Colleen Murphy is assured of plenty of support, if paraded, in the Te Koutu Park Handicap at Cambridge. Her efforts over the final stages of her races were particularly impressive, and she should have no trouble in running the two miles right out to-day. The class engaged at Cambridge is not good, and the prospects of the daughter of The Triumph are decidedly bright. Sister to Bonny Azure Although she has yet to face the starter, Lizzie Bond has been training on satisfactorily at Takanini. and the chestnut mare can be relied upon to record sound performances in her initial races at Cambridge. She is a full-sister to that brilliant pacer Bonny Azure, and In markings and conformation resembles her relative to a large degree Owing to her owner, F. J. Smith, having other representatives in trotting races, he has been forced to leave Lizzie Bond at home. She nas been in work a long time, and a feature of her training has been the solid manner in which she gets over the ground. A Consistent Pacer One of the most consistent pacers raced at Auckland is Silk Cord, trained at Hamilton by C Moran. He rarely runs a bad race, and, being a smart beginner, is able to gain a prominent position early At the last Auckland meeting Silk Cord finished a good third to Nervie's Last and Our M'Kinney in the Marconi Handicap on the opening day and finished fourth on the last day Silk Cord claims an engagement in the Militia Handicap, one mile and a-quarter, at Cambridge today, and as the gelding is suited admirably by the distance he should take a lot of beating.

CHANGED INTERVALS

BOARD'S CRITICISM The decision of ths New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club to introduce a 40-minute interval between races, instead of 35 minutes as provided for by the Rules of Trotting, was the subject of keen discussion at a meeting of the board of the New Zealand Trotting Association Mr J. R. M'Kenzie. in introducing the subject, quoted the rule about intervals between races. The Metropolitan Trotting Club had flouted this rule, and, as a leading club, had set a very bad example. Certainly, no penalty was provided tor a breach of the rule; but to advertise the fact to the public would make betting slower than ever. In his opinion the action of the Metropolitan Club constituted a deliberate breach of the rules. During the discussion Mr B. M'Carthy acted as chairman in place of Mr J. H. Williams, who is a member of the Metropolitan Club. Mr J. B. Thomson said Mr M'Kenzie had related very apparent facts. Their- appeared to be a distinct breach of the Rules of Trotting, and, as a body responsible for the administration of the rules, the association, he thought, would have to take some action. Mr T. J. VV Buxton said the Auckland Trotting Club had found it impossible to carry out the rule about intervals between races. Mr S. W Kelly said that before the president of the conference. Mr H. F Nicoll. left for England he had specially asked the clubs to give the shorter intervals a fair trial for another 12 months He thouehi that if clubs insisted on closing the totalisator at the advertised time the public would soon become educated In Wellington the spirit of the rule had been observed and while the totalisator arrangements did ".ot make for rapid balancine the club had done its duty. Mr J M. Snmson was ot the opinion that in any circumstances the Metropolitan Trotting Club should have abided bv the rules In Dunedin the Forbury Park Trotting Club had shown what could be done. A 35-minutes' interval had been observed, and it was only a question of putting some life into a meeting, having the horses on the track promptly and closing the machine at the advertised time. The public quickly became educated. and there was no difficulty Mr M'Carthy said it was the duty of the board to administer the rules The Metropolitan Trotting Club had sol a very bad example and had acted in open defiance of the rules Whatever the personal views of members mighl be. the board was elected to administer the rules of the Trott'ng Con r erenee. and the club was unwise in advertising Its intention of breaking the rules Mr Thomson had pointed out the difficulties under which Saturday's meetinf was held' but the dignity of trnttin" should be upheld bv the loadinrr club in New Zealand which should h">"p set n bettor eyirnnle Mr M'Kenzie supfes'ed that the Metropolitan Trottinc Club should be p<d:ed for an exnlanation: but Mr Thomson moved that a letter on the lines of the discussion should be forwpvded to the club. The motion was carried, and Mr M'Carthy was authorised to frame a letter to the club.
