COLONEL'S TREASURES
Rather than take from an old colonel rifles and revolvers collected during four campaigns, counsel in a London court suggested that they should be spiked by the police and returned. Ihe weapons, an American rifle, three German rifles, a pistol an-; five revolvers, had been lying, it appeared, in the attic of the Hampstead home of the owner, Lieutenant-colonel Percy John Probyn, D. 5.0., who was stated to be distinguished in war. medicine and the Colonel Probyn was summoned at Marylebone for having the weapons in his possession without a firearm certificate. In evidence he said that he joined the regular army in 1895, and retired in 1921. Two of the revolvers were his service weapons; one was given to him by his father, and the remainder had been collected in four campaigns, and were regarded by him as trophies. The magistrate: One loaded in three chambers? ~,,., Colonel Probyn: I didn't know it was loaded. __ . . The magistrate: That is why some of these Acts of Parliament are Mr A. E. Lockett, counsel for the colonel, said that these weapons created happy recollections of a very long and distinguished military service. He sugested that a technical offence had been committed, and made an earnest appeal on sentimental grounds that at least the revolver given to the colonel by his father should be handed back to him after being put out of action. In the end the magistrate dismissed the summonses under the Probation of Offenders Act on payment of £5 costs, and reserved his decision as to the pistols until after thev liad been put out of action.
