SUPREME COURT

PRISONERS SENTENCED (Pen United Press Association) GISBORNE, August 12. Leniency was extended to four prisoners who appeared for sentence before Mr Justice Blair in the Supreme Court this morning. Tahati Poki. found guilty of assault on a girl, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, his Honor remarking that a previous term of probation had been ineffective. For attempted carnal knowledge Sam Waikare received 12 months’ probation; for breaking and entering and theft Pihini Te Puni three years’ probation; for bigamy Leslie Henry Hanger 12 months’ probation. Hanger had not heard from his wife for 10 years and had not received replies to his letters. Phexe were unusual circumstances, and his Honor said probation was justified.
