SALVATION ARMY FAIR
A SUCCESSFUL OPENING
A fair and sale of work was successfully opened in the Salvation Army Citadel, Dowling street, yesterday. An extensive array of goods was offered for sale, and throughout the day there was a steady attendance of buyers. The fair will be continued to-day and will be concluded to-morrow night. The opening ceremony was performed yesterday afternoon by the Mayor (the Rev. E. T. Cox), who was introduced to the large gathering by Adjutant Mehaffie. The Mayor commended the work of the Army in the city and wished the fair every success; In the evening the Salvation Army Band rendered several items outside the Citadel and an enjoyable musical programme was presented in the hall, the contributing artistg being Messrs Colin Oliver, L. Dunbar, R. Dunbar, and A. Clark. The accompaniments were played by Mr Oliver and Mrs C. Brown. The following are the stall-holders:— Sweets, Mrs Anderson and Miss Viney; groceries, bandsmen; woollen goods, Mrs Nicolson; fancy work, Mrs Baylis and Mrs M’Corkindale; variety. Miss Yoss and Girls’ Legion Class: economic, Miss Hayes; flowers, Mrs Shankland; children’s, clothing, Mrs Millard; fruit and vegetables, Miss M'Millan and Miss Lawrence; cakes, Mrs Green and Mrs Daker; novelties, Mrs Hay and Miss Swain; plain sewing, Mrs Elford and Mrs Barnes: aprons, Mrs Higman and Mrs Pocklington; soft drinks and ice cream, Misses Fordyce and Foster; fairy tree, Mrs M’lnner. This evening will be a “ Scotch ” night, and an appropriate programme will be presented. To-morrow, a baby show will be held, and in the evening items will be given by the Forbury School Band.
