THE MOTUEKA AFFAIR
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, —I was very amused at the reprimand the Auckland Carpenters Union gave Mr Semple (Minister of Public Works) because of the way in which he handled the Motueka affair. Mr Semple’s uncompromising altitude in this dispute still rankles in the breast of every Communist who found himself ridiculed in the eyes of the people of New Zealand. Mr Semple is a continual bugbear to the Communists, and they certainly must find it rather disconcerting to have their plans continually upset by a man whose straight - from - the - shoulder methods overwhelm them. In the Soviet Union, if a worker were to
raise his voice in protest against some of the principles which the Soviet leaders hold dear he would probably come to an untimely end. I would like to suggest to all Communists who are unhappy in New Zealand that they take the first boat to Russia, their land of paradise, where, doubtless Dictator Stalin would receive them with open arms. —I am, etc., Britisher. August 10.
