OTAGO B GRADE The annual representative fixture for the Taverner Cup against North Otago was played in Dunedin last Saturday Playing conditions at Logan Park were ideal and the game proved to be most interesting, the two teams being very evenly matched. North Otago scored the first goal, but this was quickly followed by a goal for Otago, Miss J. Ferguson netting a long-distance shot. Miss M. Faulkner (North Otago) did good defence work and stopped many of Otago’s quick forward movements. Miss Ireland played well, and scored four of North Otago’s five goals in the first half. The half time score was live all. _ Miss O. Ferguson opened Otagos score in the second half. North Otago retaliated, and for the next few minutes the scores were evenly added. Miss Gillies rdded most of Otago’s goals rapidlv, the other forwards combining well to help her. Otago appeared to have most of the ball but North Otago's accurate shooting kept the scores even. Both teams were playing well, and scored i the last few minutes but Otago managed to retain its lead of one point, and the final score was 12—11. Misses R. White ad M Gollen were the outstanding Otago centres, and Misses M. Peterson and J. Frase>- did good work for North Otago. Mr F Bartlett controlled the game. NORTH OTAGO B v OTAGO C

The Otago C Grade team held the advantage in its game against North Otago B. and considering the short time available for coaching purposes acquitted itself very well. Otago opened the scoring, which was

followed immediately by a goal by North Otago. The Otago centres worked well, and kept the forwards well supplied with t’ ■* ball. Although during the earliest stages of the game both teams lost-chances through mac-, curate shooting, they speeded up the game, and at half time Otago had netted 10 goals to North Otago’s 6. Otago opened the scoring in the second half, North Otago quickly following. The play in the second half appeared to be better all round, the Otago centres. Misses L. Douglas and B. Neale, instituting several good moves and showing themselves to be equally good at defending and attacking. Miss J. Martin played well for North Otago. Of the defence players, Miss Atkinson (North Otago) and Miss F. Smaill (Otago) were outstanding. Misses S. Ogg and L. Packer scored most of Otago’s goals, although all three players combined very well. The final score was 15—10 in Otago’s favour.

The game was refereed by Miss M. S. Fleming

The teams were the guests of the association at afternoon tea after the completion of the games, when Mrs W. B. Taverner, president, welcomed the visitors and expressed he great pleasure of all at the opportunity of meeting the northern members of the association. Miss Fitzgerald, manager of the visiting teams, conveyed greetings from the North Otago Association, after which the Taverner Cup was presented to the captain of the Otago B team (Miss J. Guthrie). The North Otago captain also extended the congratulations of her team. The visitors were entertained at a picture party in the evening, returning to Oamaru the next day. FIRST GRADE TOURNAMENT The annual First Grade tournament was also held at Logan Park last Saturday in conjunction with the representative fixtures. The nine First Grade teams competed, so that every team played eight games, this providing a heavy programme for both officials and players Fortunately, four courts were available, so that it was possible to play all the games in each round simultaneously. Albany I, the premier team, was also successful in winning the tournament banner this year, although in its game against Roslyn the result was undecided until the last few seconds, when Albany successfully shot at goal. There was great excitement when the score reached three all both sides making desperate efforts to score. These were frustrated, however, but Albany again managed to send the ball to the forward third in time to score the last goal. The final score was; Albany 4, Roslyn 3.

The following table shows the relative positions of the teams competing at the conclusion of the day’s play:—
