INDUSTRIAL AWARDS
FIRST SERIES OF CASES A FORMIDABLE LIST (Special to Daily Times) AUCKLAND, August 11. The first opportunity of applying for new awards since the introduction by the Labour Government of its industrial legislation will be given to unions when the Arbitration Court begins its sittings in Auckland. Considerable interest is being taken in the session, which will be the first here under the conditions and with the new powers given to the court by this year’s amendment of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act A formidable list of cases will have to be dealt with by the court. Twenty industrial disputes have been set down for hearing apart from 11 compensation claims, applications to add parties to awards, and apprenticeship and miscellaneous applications. For the first time since 1932 industrial disputes of a major character will be heard here Two typical disputes to be taken on August 18 and 19 are the plumbers and creameries’ disputes, which are of local scope. Dominion wages and conditions will be at stake in the freezing workers’ dispute, for which August 20 and 21 have been set aside.
A feature of the applications for awards is the number of new organisations which are making their first appearance before the court.
