HIS MAJESTY'S THEATRE
MADAME LA MERI Madame La Meri achieved another artistic success at His Majesty's Theatre last night with her charming dancing. La Meri presents a remarkable programme of dances, and in every one she gives a distinctive interpretation. Four Spanish dances served to introduce the artist, and the audience at once realised" that they were seeing a dancer whose international fame had been well deserved. Her other items included "The White Peacock," "Asturiana" (Peasant dance), "Ravel's Bolero," "Antique Bolero," "Humoresque" (with masks), "Caprice Viennoise (Kreisler), "Carabali," "Mexican Hat Dance," "Geisha Dance of Spring," " Empress of the Pagodas," and " Hindu Dance." Associated with La Meri is an instrumental trio composed of Mario Salerno (piano), Joan Howley ('cello), and Tom Challen (violin), and the lighting effects are devised by Averardo Bertocchi and Guido Carreras. SECOND DANCE PROGRAMME Mme La Meri will present the second programme of her brief season at His Majesty's Theatre to-night. The interest which is being .taken in this visit of a celebrity dancer to Dunedin is reflected in the great demand for seats for the three remaining evening performances. Intending patrons are advised to book their seats early as the number of cheaper seats for the rest of the season will be limited. The plans are also open at the D.I.C. for the matinee performance to-morrow afternoon at 2.15, when to-night's programme will be repeated in full. The 15 new dances on this programme will include dances to show all sides of Mme. La Meri's amazing versatility. The Spanish dances will be " Miranda a Espana," a modern castanet dance, "Jota Aragonesa," the fastest of all Spanish dances; " Goyesca," danced to the music of Granados; and " Hearts and Spades," a gipsy dance performed with a pack of cards. Another magnificent group of dances will include " Gavotte " (Valentini); "The Russian Doll." an extraordinary comic dance; "Symphonic Studies," to Schumann's music, and "The Adoration of the Virgin." The Oriental dances will include " Danse Arabe" to Tschaikovsky's music; " Lasyanatana," a Hindu dance which tells of the adventures of a young girl in her garden, and a Javanese Court dance. Other dances of interest will be "El Cato," performed in heavy spurred riding boots; " Hulalei Hula," and " Cueca Cilena," a Chilean dance. Mario Salerno will play Chopin's Ballade in G minor, and other piano solos, and there will be trio and instrumental interludes. Seats at Cs and 4s may be reserved at the D.I.C, and day sale tickets for back stalls at 3s and a limited number of pit seats at 2s will be available at the Rialto this morning.
