—.—^ BALCLUTHA Presentation at Romahapa At the conclusion of a business meeting on Saturday night recognition of the invaluable service rendered by the president of the Romahapa School Reunion Association was made, when the members of the committee presented Mr M. T. Jackman with a suitably inscribed walking stick. Mr I. Dent, vice-president in making the presentation, eulogiled the recipient, whose administrative ability, he said, had assured the success of the reunion. Other speakers who supported Mr Dent's remarks were Mr A. Simpson (Balclutha), Mr A. Ogilvie (School Committee), and Mr A. Eric Paterson. On rising to reply, Mr Jackman, who was received with musical honours, said that his duties had been made easy by the unswerving loyalty of an efficient committee. He would always treasure the gift as a tangible memento of the appreciation of his associates on the Reunion Committee. An Owaka Function On the eve of their departure from Owaka to Paretai, Mr and Mrs G. M'K. Barr were entertained at a farewell social by the people of Owaka. Mr T. Maginness presided, and eulogised the work of Mr Barr in the community, and wished him every success in his new farm at Paretai. The Rev. Mr Blair and others referred to the good work of the Barr family in connection with the Presbyterian Church, and the two children were presented with Bibles from the Sunday school, Mrs Barr with a fire screen from the Ladies' Guild, and Mr Barr was presented with a handsome chiming clock from the community. WANAKA Ice Skating After two frosts over the week-end, Diamond Lake was again in excellent condition for skating, and on Monday night a skating party was held at the lake. A full moon provided sufficient light for the skaters, and bathed the surrounding snow-capped mountains in soft white light, making a picture not easily forgotten. The supper provided by the lady members of the party was much appreciated by all. Enthusiasts from Ettrick and Alexandra made the trip especially for the skating, and gave some very fine exhibitions of fancy skating.

Rifle Shooting In a match fired under ideal weather conditions on Saturday, August 1, by the Clutha Junction Defence Rifle Club, the following scores were registered: —W. Gillespie, net 49, hep. 4 total, 50: W. J. Gillespie. 48, 2—50; J. Byers, 47, 5—50; J. W. Haugh, 48, 3 50; A. Sherwin, 43, 7—47; C. Templeton, 39, 7—46: I. Carson, 39, 7—46; D. Gillespie, 39, 4—43; D. Carson, 31, 10—41. The gold rifle was won by W. J. Gillespie. Young Farmers A meeting of the Young Farmers' Club was held in Pembroke on Thursday night. The meeting, which was well attended, was addressed by Mr C. V. Dayus, who illustrated his lecture on "Parasites," with lantern slides. Football In an uninteresting game played under miserable weather conditions last Saturday, the team from Matakanui defeated Wanaka by 18 points to nine. For Matakanui L. Alexander scored two tries, and R. D. Kinder and I. Mac Kay scored one try each. N. White converted one, and P. Scoular potted a goal. The scorers for Wanaka were I. Matheson (one try) and R. Burnes (two tries). Next Saturday Cromwell will play Wanaka at Pembroke. Golf During the week the final of the Ladies' Club Championship was played over 36 holes, and after a close contest Miss M. Perrow beat Mrs George Morris 2 up and 1 to play. The conditions of play on Saturday were not of the best, but in spite of the dampness of the links after the heavy rain, there was a full number of players. The ladies of the club played a Medal Match, and the best scores were as follows:—Mrs W. Anderson 100—36 —64, Mrs R. Waldron 117—36—81, Miss J. Scaife 104—22—82, Mrs J. Perrow 116—32—84, Mrs F. Collings 102—17 85. The men also played a Medal Match on Saturday, the best cards handed in being:—J. Rennie 78—18—60, D. Morris 90—25—65, R. Waldron 95—29—66. T. Anderson 102—26—66. J. Perrow 76 —9—67, F. Jackson 87—17-70. G. Wilkie 90—20—70, W. Ironside 91—21 —7O, C. Templeton 82—10—72, D. Galloway 105—30—75, C. Collings 100—23 —77, W. Scaife 114—30—84, C. Ewing 115—30—85. A lot of work is being done on the links at present in preparation for the tournament, which is to beheld on Friday and Saturday, September 4 and 5. The ladies of the club have decided to spend a considerable sum on renovating the club house, also in reparation for the tournament. Dance A successful dance was held in the Pembroke Hall on Saturday night under the auspices of the 'Wanaka Football Club. In spite of the bad state of the weather there was an excellent attendance. At the conclusion of the dance a smoke social was held. The visitors from Matakanui were present, and the social was greatly enjoyed. Weather The weather in Pembroke has been very changeable during the past week and heavy rain fell intermittently from Wednesday until Saturday. The week ended with a fine warm day, the barometer rising slowly. ROXBURGH Supplementary Mails As the result of an application made to the Post and Telegraph Department some months ago, the regular mail service of the district has been supplemented by an extra mail out and in each day. Mails may be posted by 10 p.m. each night for despatch by the early morning bus the following morning, and Dunedin letters posted during the day. or letters arriving in Dunedin from other centres, will be despatched for Roxburgh by the afternoon bus, leaving Dunedin at 5 p.m. and reaching Roxburgh at 9 p.m. This mail is sorted the same evening into the private boxes. Golf Conditions were ideal for the matches played on Saturday, there being a large number of players out. The final of the Men's Knock-out was played and I. M'JLennan beat K. Wright by 3 and 1. The following is the result of the Men's Medal Match:—A. Lamb, 75—8— 67; J. M'Mahon. 93—24—69; B. Gilmour, 90—20—70; A. Scolon, 90—14 76; H. Gilchrist, 106—30—76; F. A. Laloli, 100—22—78; J. Uren, 104—26 78; H. White, 100—21—79. During the week the women played another round of their K.O. Foursome, and Mrs Uren and Mrs Laloli beat Mrs Tough and Mrs George. Mrs Elder and Mrs GilmoUr beat Miss Blanchard and Miss Cockburn. The following is the result of the Women's Medal Handicap:—Miss George, 89—18—71; Mrs Laloli, 89—16 —73; Mrs Gilmour, 87—13—74; Mrs George, 97—21—76; Mrs Tough, 100— 20—80; Mrs Uren, 101—19—82; Mrs Elder, 102—19—83; Miss Gilmour, 109 —26—83. Tuapeka Hockey Tournament The hockey tournament was played on the Miller's Flat ground under excellent conditions. There was a good attendance of the public, and some excellent games were witnessed. EDIEVALE Rifle Shooting ' The Edievale Defence Rifle Club fired a handicap trophy match on the local range on Saturday last. A fairly large number of members was in attendance to take part in the shoot. Weather conditions were not very favourable for good shooting, a cold wind prevailing all the afternoon. Some rather good scores were registered, particularly by Deputy President P. Finlayson and Rifleman J. Adam, the former obtaining the possible at 300 yards. TAPANUI Rifle Shooting The Tapanui Defence Rifle Club fired its fifth cup match on Saturday, when the weather was particularly cold and windy, and as a consequence the attendance was smaller than has been the case in previous shoots. Under the difficult conditions prevailing the scores returned were quite good. Detailed scores:—

The Southland basketball representatives visited Tapanui on Saturday, and, after a fast and exciting game, defeated West Otago by 24 to 15.

CLYDE Song and Story Under the auspices of the local branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union, Miss Nita Rosslyn, familiarly known as the "Girl in Red," gave a performance in the Town Hall on Thursday. The performer, who hai a pleasing voice, entertained her audience with a fine variety of songs, and her travel talk through many lands was most interesting. Owing to the wet night and counter . attractions, there was a poor attendance. Rugby Football The Clyde Football Club, which has been in existence for close on 50 years, has had many ups and downs. The present year is one of the downs, as they have not been able to field a team for the last two matches. An attempt was made last week to level the playing area with the big county grader, but owing to the frost it had to be abandoned in the meantime.. Hare Drive The annual shoot at Strath-Clyde Is always looked forward to by those taking part in it. The hospitality extended by Mr and Mrs M'Arthur was not the Kasf part, and, although the afternoon was cold and windy, a fair bag was obtained. Golf Under bad conditions, a strong, cold wind' prevailing, the Clyde and Alexandra Clubs played a match on the Clyde links on Saturday afternoon, Clyde winning, the men being up and the women all square. The individual scores were not available. Town Trust At the last meeting of the Town Trust it was decided to prohibit smoking in the main hall, notices to that effect being prominently placed. The main entrance is to be brought into line with the rest of the interior -by being painted. The appointment of a secretary was not finalised.
