The day was mostly cloudy, with a moderate north-westerly wind increasing to gale force in the afternoon, with gusts reaching 58 miles an hour at 2.50 p.m. and 11.30 p.m. Nine points of rain were recorded when a heavy shower occurred about 11 p.m. Today was fine and clear in the morning with a fresh north-westerly wind, but it clouded over somewhat during the afternoon. The maximum temperature yesterday was 50.3 deg., and to-day 56.8 deg. CHRISTCHURCH, August 9. The weather on Saturday was gloriously fine in the morning, with a light easterly breeze, but it clouded over at noon and the afternoon was chilly. The sun shone brilliantly today, with warm temperatures. A light breeze from the east blew throughout the day. The barometer fell from Saturday at noon, but re-, covered steadily to-day, registering 29.78 in at 5.30 p.m.
