SOUTH OTAGO
BALCLUTHA Schools’ Football Tournament The annual seven-a-side tournament under the auspices of the South Otago Schools' Sports Association was played on the Show Ground at Balclutha on Saturday in fine weather. The games were controlled by the football subcommittee of the association, comprising Messrs G. H. Mitchell (convener), W. H. Hampton (Kaitangata), and G. Walker (Otanomomo). Messrs A. Good and €.* G. Clark assisted the teachers in refereeing. The results were:— A Grade (open to schools of any grade, maximum weight Bst 41b) — First round: Balclutha A 12, Kaitangata C nil, Kaitangata A 23, Balclutha B nil, Kaitangata B 14, Clinton nil; Stirling 6, Toko 3. Second round: Clinton 5, Balclutha B nil; Toko 6, Kaitangata C nil; Kaitangata B 9, Toko nil; Kaitangata A 24, Clinton nil; Balclutha A 5, Kaitangata B nil. Final: Kaitangata A defeated Balclutha A by three points (a penalty goal) to nil. The following are the names of the winning team: —V. Hughes, B. Sutton, J. Haig, W. Good, V. Bowmar, L. Henderson, M. Robertson. * B Grade (open to schools of Grade 3A or lower, maximum weight Bst 41b) —First round: Tuapeka Mouth 13, Waiwera nil; Hillend 9, Otanomomo nil; Waiwera 13, Otanomomo nil. Final: Tuapeka Mouth 5, Hillend nil. C Grade (bantam, maximum weight sst 71b)—Clinton 9, Balclutha B nil; Balclutha A 12, Kaitangata B nil; Toko A 9, Kaitangata C 3; Kaitangata A 22, Toko B nil; Kaitangata B 3J, Balclutha B 3; Kaitangata C 6, Toko B nil; Kaitangata A 16, Clinton nil; Balclutha A 24, Toko A nil; Clinton 6, Kaitangata B 3. Final: Balclutha A defeated Kaitangata A by three points to nil after extra time had been played. The following are the names of the winning team;—D. Barron, M. Cunliffe, R. Hastings, C. Mulvey, R. Murray, J. Willcocks, S. Wright.
Second Grade Rugby The final for Ihe Second Grade banner between Woodlands and Crescent II followed the tournament. Shortly after the start James Smith (Woodlands) received a kick on the back of the neck, resulting in slight concussion, and he was replaced by Brown. A penalty go?] was kicked for Woodlands by J. Telfer, and W. Hughes evened the score with a similar kick for Crescent. In the second spell Ross scored for Woodlands, but Telfer’s kick at goal failed, and W. Hughes again evened the score with a penalty goal. Falconer (Woodlands) at this stage had to go off and Meek went on. Before the game ended Telfer had kicked a penalty goal, and Hughes responded with a similar effort, so that when the whistle blew for time the score was 9—9. It was decided to play two extra spells of seven minutes each. In the first spell no score was made, but about the close of the second Stevenson scored for Crescent, the try being unconverted. Crescent thus became the winners of the flag for 1936. Mr C. G. Clark was the reierec.
Representative Match South Otago defeated West Otago on the Kaitangata ground on Saturday in a closely-contested game by 14 points to 12 points. It was the first time a sub-union representative match had been played on the Kaitangata ground, and the attendance was fair. The ground was heavy. In the first spell Muir scored for South Otago, and Middlemass converted. Middlemass also kicked a penalty goal for South Otago. Peterson kicked a penalty goal for West Otago, and R. M'Kenzic scored a try. In the second spell Middlemass kicked another penalty, and A. Orr scored a try for South Otago, and for West Otago C. and J. M'Kenzie each scored tries. T. Gold had the misfortune to twist an ankle during the game. Basketball South Otago representative team was defeated on the High School courts on Saturday by Southland Girls’ High School by 12 goals to 11 goals.
