A TROPHY IN CHEESE
Races with farm and dairy produce as the prizes were held in all parts of the Dominion in the early days, when the enthusiasm of the settlers demanded merely a more or less level piece of ground, properly flagged, a scale and the chance to support a fancied ruanar for
a modest amount. Such occasions were the real foundation of many country clubs that arc flourishing to-day, and (says an exchange) any suggestion that prizes in kind should be part of the winner's rewards would l>e regarded as retrograde and, possibly, insulting. Not so in England, for, in addition to the valuable money prizes and trophy attached to the famous Chester Cup, won
shire cheese, valued at £5, is given the I owners of the three placed horses. With such a precedent in connection with a race that was first run in 1824, country clubs might consider the adoption of a similar scheme to advertise the productive value of their districts.
About 1.785,000 workpeople in Britain had a rise in wages during the first quarter of this year. They are genius between them nearly £250,000 more money. This is on top of the rises obtained bf 2,355,000 people last year. At the same time hours of work have been reduced if thousands of cases.
