OBITUARY
MR A. E. CAIRNS The death occurred at his residence in Chapman street yesterday morning of Mi- Alexander Edmond Cairns, at the age of Si! years. Born at Newlands, Scotland, on April 23, 1850, Mr Cairns went out to Australia with his parents when only a year old. He remained in Melbourne for 12 years, receiving his early education at the Model School there. In 1803 he came to Dunedin by the ship Gothenburg. Shortly after his arrival in the city the Otago Boys’ Higli School was founded, and Mr Cairns was enrolled as a pupil on the day the institution was opened. At school he displayed outstanding ability ns a cricketer, and for live years was a prominent member of the school’s first eleven. Later, he represented Otago at cricket, and from 1807 to 1871 was successful both as a bowler and a batsman in inttyprovincial matches. On leaving school, Mr Cairns joined the staff of the Bank of New South Wales and was stationed at Dunedin and Naseby. He did not like the indoor life, and, after a few years’ service, resigned his position and returned to Australia. After four years in the Commonwealth ho again sailed for New Zealand, where he joined the staff of the Railways Department, from which ho retired in iJ)I2. While in the service he was stationed at Invercargill, Clinton, Wairio, Wanganui and Nightcaps, Dir Cairns spent his retirement in Nightcaps and Dunedin. Of a quiet disposition, he did not take a prominent part in public affairs, bis chief interest outside his work being cricket, of which lie always was a keen follower. In 1880 Dir Cairns was'married to Miss Johnstone, of Annandale Station, Southland, who, together with a sister, Miss Margaret Cairns, survives him.
FATHER HERRING (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) SYDNEY, June 16. The death is announced of the Rev. Father Joseph Herring, aged 53. He collapsed while taking part in a Corpus Christ! procession at Manly. He was educated at St. Patrick’s College, Wellington. and was ordained by the late Archbishop Redwood in 1910. He did parish work in Wellington, Reeflon, and Whangarci.
MR ARTHUR JOHNS
SYDNEY, June 10,
The Daily Telegraph says that, after long planning for his trip to England, Mr Arthur Johns, aged 50, of Highland Park, Wellington, arrived in Sydney yesterday with his wife and son on the first stage of their journey. lie died lasi night in an hotel of heart failure.
MR J. 0. JAMESON (Per United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, June 1(5. The death occurred suddenly to-day of Mr John Owen Jameson, aged 00 years. He was formerly a member of the Stock Exchange for 25 years. He dropped dead while boarding a tramear in Seaview road, New Brighton, this afternoon. Last year he had a severe illness, from which he had not completely recovered.
