TARIFF CHANGES
RETALIATION BY JAPAN
LIKELY TO BE AVOIDED (United Press Association) (By Electric Teleßraph—Copyright) CANBERRA, June 15. (Received June 15, at 11.43 p.m.) Sir Henry Gullett, Minister in Charge of Trade Treaties, stated to-day that trade negotiations had been re-opened with Japan through Mr Murai, the Consul-general in Sydney, and it was expected that immediate retaliation, by Japan against the recently imposed textile duties would be avoided. Sir Henry Gullett pointed out that Japan was awakening to the fact that the Australian new tariff was not nearly so harmful as anticipated, and there was now a much better understanding as a result of the two-way communications since the publication of the schedule.
JAPANESE WOOL STOCKS SUFFICIENT FOR SOME MONTHS TOKIO, Juno 15. (Received June 15, at 11.43 p.m.) It is estimated that the present stocks of merino wool in mills aggregate 400,000 bales. This is sufficient until October 31 or, if manufacturing is curtailed 30 per cent, until December 31.
