CITY POLICE COURT

ALLEGED FORGERY. James Alexander Fleming was again before the court on remand to answer a charge of having forged a bill of exchange for the amount of £834 Ilia 8d. — Mr J. G. Warrington appeared for the accused who, on the application of Chief Detective Young, was further remanded until Thursday morning. CARE OF CHILDREN. William Gray Grigg was proceeded against by the police with respect to the maintenance of two children aged 12 and 10 years respectively.—Mr 0. G. Stevens appeared for the defendant and explained that Grigg up till recently had been on relief works for six years and four months. During that time he had accumulated various debts, which he was reducing gradually now that he had steady work with the City Corporation. Defenij/unt said he could not make any offer at present, but would undertake to pay 7s fid per week in six months' time if his preseut work held.—After cross-examina-tion of the defendant Senior Sergeant Packer asked for an adjournment to enable fuller inquiries to be made. The defendant was not doing his best and on a weekly wage of £4 7s he should be able to pay a fair thing.—The magistrate suggested a consent order with respect to one child and an adjournment for six mouths with respect to the other. This was agreed to. MAINTENANCE. The case in which James Hodge White was proceeded against by his wife for maintenance was further adjourned in consequence of the inability of complainant to appear owing to ill-health. Martin Fraser was proceeded against on a complaint for disobedience of a maintenance order, the arrears to February 17 amounting to tl'iS 2s. The defendant applied for a variation, and after hearing evidence the magistrate remitted arrears over £5, the information for disobedience being adjourned sine die, on condition that defendant supply fortnightly, to the maintenance officer in Wellington a true statement of his earnings. Robert James M'Connell was proceeded against by his wife on a complaint for a maintenance order, but after hearing evidence the magistrate dismissed the information without prejudice, the defendant agreeing to give his wife money to carry on with if Adjutant Coombs or Miss Coe-Sinith held that she was destitute.
