PEACE ON NEW BASIS

THE GERMAN PROPOSALS BRITISH NOTE UNANSWERED (British Official Wtreltßgi • RUGBY, June 10. The inquiries addressed to Herr Hitler's Government by the British Government with a view to clarifying the former's proposals for negotiations over peace on a new basis were mentioned at question time in the House of Commons.

The Foreign Secretary said no reply had yet been received to the communication made by the British Ambassador at Berlin on May (i. Mr Eden added: "On May 23 the British Ambassador was instructed to remind the German Government of the desire of his Majesty's Government to receive a reply. Sir Eric Phipps was further asked to emphasise that his Majesty's Government was anxious to elucidate as soon as possible points which were not clear to it in the German Government's memoranda of March 7, 24 and 31, and that the purpose of his Majesty's Government was to secure that general negotiations should be opened for the conclusion of Western and Eastern European security arrangements and the return of Germany to the League of Nations, with a view to a permanent solution of the situation created by the German Government's action in March. In the reply it was intimated to Sir Erie Phipps by the German Government On May 26 that no reply would be forthcoming until after the formation of the new French Government."

GERMANY'S EARNEST DESIRE

BERLIN, dune 11. (Received June 11, at 11.15 p.m.) Herr Ribbeutrop, in a preface to a collection of diplomatic documents covering the history of the Locarno Treaty, which will shortly be published, declares: " Germany wishes nothing mort earnestly than the negotiation of a new Locarno but she emphasises that, if a new treaty cannot be concluded without a contribution by Germany to a solution of the Rhincland question, it will take a long time in the making. Germany will not permit further discussion over her regained sovereignty in the Uhineland." He adds that Germany i- more interested in the future than the past, and it is Germany's earnest desire to conclude.?, true and final peace with her neighbours and build in the West a new Locarno.
