LICENSING COMMITTEE
SOUTH END HOTELS The annual meeting of the South Dunedin Licensing Committee was held yesterday, and was attended by Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M., who presided, and Messrs J. J. Marlow, A. D. Edgar, E. Longworth, J. Adam and A. Smiley. The chairman said that the committee had before it the usual reports from the police and the reports from the city and St. Kilda building inspectors, and it desired to express gratification at their very satisfactory nature. With, regard to the buildings in particular, the reports were excellent. The licensees were showing a desire to keep their premises in a satisfactory state of repair. The chairman referred to the condition of the pumps in some of the hotels, and said that the committee endorsed the suggestion in the report that licensees should pay attention to keeping them in good order by making certain alterations in their installations. The police report Was good.. There was not, however, a clean sheet, as there was a conviction against one hotelkeeper. When the application for this particular licence came before the committee the chairman said that the licensee of the Waterloo Hotel and an employee had been fined, and also five men who had been found illegally on the premises. The committee would like to draw the attention of the licensee to the conduct of his hotel.
Mr B. S. Irwin, who appeared for the licensee, said that this was a case in which the licensee had not been present to look aftcr»the place. The chairman said that the committee knew the circumstances. It looked on the offence as a serious one.
Licences were granted as follows: Ocean Beach Hotel, John H. Pearson; Parksidc Hotel, Matthew H. Dawson; Bay View Hotel, Robert K. Aitchison; St. Kilda Hotel, David P. Wilson; Ocean View Hotel, William J. Hargreaves; Fitzroy Hotel, Thomas H. Cahill; Waterloo Hotel, William Crossan.
