SATURDAY’S MATCHES UNIVERSITY A v. HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS A The game between University A and High School Old Boys A, which was played on Oval No. 1 on Saturday, was disappointing in every way. The meeting of these two teams had been expected to provide a bright display, but neither side played well, and the exhibition was one of which neither team had cause to be proud. University did not field its full team, several of the positions' being filled by players from the B team. Only three incidents were productive of interest. From a University attack, the centre-forward found an opening, but, conforming to the practice adopted by the remainder of the players, he’ hit hard and sent the ball over the not. Neater handling of his stick would probably have meant victory. Old Boys duplicated the procedure, when Martin received from a corner and sent the ball over the bar. When the game was nearing its end University had another chance. Cawkwell, right full-back, made an excellent run, usurping the prerogative of the forwards, but, when he was within striking distance, he allowed himself to offend and a free hit to Old Boys put an end to the most promising movement of the game. Old Boys put up a very solid defence and University seldom succeeded In passing the rearguard. Felton, of the halves, was specially conspicuous, appearing to bo tireless in his endeavours to stem the tide of the Blue advances. Of the forward lines, University provided the better displaay, but the usual £icat stick work was lacking and the attacks lacked the sting which is usually associated with the efforts of this combination. Neither side succeeded in passing the other’s defence and the game ended:— University A Nil. High School Old Boys A Nil. Messrs A. Wheatley and A. Chapman were the referees. ALBANY v. UNIVERSITY B Albany secured an easy victory over University B at Logan Park by 7 goals to nil. Albany attacked from the initial bully, a twenty-five resulting. Albany attacked, just missing a score, the ball hitting a goal post. From the bully-off Albany again attacked, 0. Dey scoring. Albany cleared an attack and carried play to the circle. University gave a corner from the ensuing play, Ainger scoring. From the bully Albany carried play to the circle and Ainger scored. Play went up and down the field at a fast pace, neither side gaining any advantage. From a free hit Albany carried play to the circle, where 0. Dey scored. From the bully University went right through to the circle and just missed scoring. Then Albany attacked, gaining a corner, from which University cleared, but Albany came right back to the circle and Rennick scored. In the second spell 0. Dey scored Albany’s sixth goal. University set up a strong attack, Albany clearing, but University came back again and just missed scoring. From the bully Albany went right to the other end and gained a corner. Albany returned to the attack, but spoiled the effort by hitting too hard. The Reds kept up the attack, and Meinung scored the final goal. The game ended: —• Albany 7 goals University B .. .. Nil Messrs Mulholland and Barnes were the referees. HIGH SCHOOL OLD,; BOYS B y. TRAINING COLLEGE High School Old Boys B and Training College met at Tonga Park in a game which resulted in a decisive victory for Old Boys. College failed to show much improvement on previous form. The first spell found the game fairly even, Old Boys failing to find their stride. The only score was by Mayston, who beat Olds, the College goalie, in a penalty bully. With the commencement of the second spell, however, Old Boys made the pace, and College had little opportunity to become dangerous. Mayston scored four more goals and Webb scored once. Just before the call of time, College made a desperate effort from which M'Kelvoy beat the goalie to score College’s only goal this season. The game ended :-V H.B. Old Boys B .. 0 goals.
