COUNTRY BAKERS

UNFAIR TRADE CONDITIONS DEPUTATION TO PARLIAMENTARIANS Measures for the protection of country bakers against unfair trade conditions were sought by a deputation of bakers which waited on members of Parliament at the Dunedin Trades Hall on Monday morning last. There were present Messrs J. W. Munro (in the chair), P. Ncilson and A. Campbell (members of Parliament) and about 14 bakers who were present at the invitation of the executive of the South Island Country Bakers’ Association. The matters' which the deputation put before the members were as under: — 1. Elimination of the competition of the citv baker in country areas. 2. Protection from further competition in country areas where existing country bakers might decide to co-operate with the object of gaining more efficiency. 3. Country districts being permitted to fix their own delivery charges, under the supervision of the Department of Industries and Commerce, based on the “ cash over the counter ” price for that district.

4. Licensing of re-sellcra. 5. Competition of mail contractors in delivering. 0. Application of the health regulations in relation to mail contract, and other deliveries. The deputation felt that a useful purpose had been served by holding the meeting as it had set in train actions which would, it was confidently expected, eventually remove the inequities and anomalies under which the trade had been suffering in the past. The meeting unanimously requested Mr Munro to convey to the Minister for Industries and Commerce (Mr D. G. Sullivan) its acknowledgment of the importance and • difficulties of the task ho had undertaken in controlling the baking industry, its appreciation of the services that lie had rendered to the industry to date, and its confidence in his ability to complete the task success-' fully. The members stated that they appreciated many of the difficulties of the country bakers, who might rest assured that they would do everything within their power to permit the country baker to trade under fair conditions.
