UNEMPLOYMENT TAXATION Elsewhere in this issue appears an intimation by the secretary of labour that on May 1 the usual quarterly instalment of the general unemployment levy will become duo. and that on the same date will also fall due the first instalment of the emergency unemployment charge of 8d in the £ on income other than salary or wages derived during the year ended March 31. 1036. All male persons, including Natives, of 20 years of age or over are required in May each year to furnish declarations of income other than salary or wages. If no such income is derived a “nil” declaration is required. A woman whose income other than salary or wages exceeds £SO must also furnish a declaration in respect of her income. This applies also to Native women. Full information and declaration forms are obtainable at all Money Order Offices, and payment of the emergency unemployment charge should bo made at a local post office or to the secretary. It is pointed out that persons who fail to furnish declarations as and when required render themselves liable, on summary conviction, to a fine of £SO. A penalty equal to 10 per cent, of the amount of tax duo will be added to any instalment not paid within one month of the due date.
