NAPIER WOOL SALE

GROWERS' EXPECTATIONS REALISED MARKET FIRM AT LATE RATES BRADFORD PURCHASES HEAVILY (Per United Press Association) NAPIER, March 20. A sellers' market prevailed at the fourth Napier wool sale to-day, when growers' expectations of a good sale were realised. The offering of 30,000 bales mostly consisted of high-country late-shorn lots, with very few super lots. The offering was typically top-making. Competition was exceptionally animated, the bidding being the most forceful known at Napier for some years. The market was fully firm, and there was little appreciable change on the last Wellington sale. In one big catalogue several heavy lines of medium crossbrcds in interlotted and binned wools compared with the February sale were id to id dearer. Coarser and lower grade fleece wool showed hardening tendencies in values, the same applying to the better type of superior lambs which were in limited supply. The offering of interlotted and binned wools was a feature of the eale, and drew exceptionally strong competition, selling particularly well. .From the outset Bradford strongly entered the market, dominating it throughout. Continental operators, although securing many suitable types, were quieter than at the last Napier sale. Japan also bought well. Competition was made keen with more buyers operating on the same limits, with a good margin of elasticity shown for specialty lines. The highest price was 14Jd,ior 12 bales of Southdown-Romney cross on account of Mr Ormond, Mahia. An outstanding line of hoggets from Mount Herbert (Central Hawke's Bay) brought 14Jd. Hogget lots generally were slightly tender, average lines making and medium lots 10id. Lambs' wool generally was discoloured. A few bright lots were offered, 13d being reached for an exceptional line. Values were well on the reserves, resulting in growers readily meeting the market, and enabling a heavy clearance under the hammer. On the basis of quality the sale was the best held in Napier this season. The following is the official range ot prices:— Southdown — , Good to super, 13d to 14d.
