UNIVERSITY MATCH OTAGO DEFEATS CANTERBURY Otago University defeated Canterbury College by 120 runs in the annual cricket match, which was concluded at Logan Park yesterday. On the first day Otago made 163 and Canterbury lost six wickets for 122. Canterbury's decision to declare without batting again yesterday morning caused surprise, but it was explained that the purpose was to endeavour to reach a decision, all of the matches between these teams since 1929 having been drawn. The defeat of Otago seemed likely when five wickets fell for 34 in its second innings, but a lively innings for 97 by Uttley made a recovery possible. * The innings was declared closed for 201, and Canterbury was dismissed for 122 with 20 minutes to spare. Swinging different ways, Alpers and Livingstone had the Otago men in trouble at the start of their second innings. Three wickets fell for onb; 14 runs, and although Henderson with a useful 13 improved the position, the fourth wicket fell at 28 and the fifth at 34. Alpers had claimed three victims, all clean bowled, at a cost of only 18 runs. Christie remained with Uttley until the total had reached 49 and then went lbw to Arneson in the bowler's third over. When Dougall was given a trial, however. Uttley changed his tactics and hit three fours and a six off the new bowler's first over. Dougall's next over yielded 12, including a four and another six to Uttley. Uttley continued to make the most of his scoring opportunities, and Hogjjans opened out to bring 100 up with a four. The partnership added 80 before Hojtgans, whose contribution was 16. cave an easv catch to short -leg. Uttley was still gathering runs quickly, but at 95 he skied a ball from Alpers to deep third man, the fieldsman misjudging the chance. He gathered two run s off the shot, but skied another ball closer in, and Hay accepted the chance. Uttley's score included 12 fours and two sixes. Eight were down for 155. Begg played a breezy innings for 22, and at lunch nine were down for 182. When Otaijo's score had been carried to 201 on the resumption Uttley declared the innines closed, leaving the visitors 243 to make for a win. ■ Alpers, who took five for 70 in the first innings, was again the most successful bowler, securing an average of fivfe for 62. Although a steady rate of scoring was required for the runs to be made in the time available, the Canterbury men made a slow start. The first wicket fell at 8, when Somerville was dismissed with a irood slip catch, and two were down for 26 when Lawson held a chance from Byrne. R. C. Saunders was beginning to improve the rate of scoring when at 23 he lost his middle stump. At the tea adjournment the total was 60, leaving the visitors 182 to make, in less than two hours. Hay and Arneson remained together in suite of several changes of bowling, but their rate of scoring was low. The partnership was not broken until five o'clock, when Hay drove Christie hard to Satyanand. who held a fine catch. Hay had batted for 155 minutes for 47. Four were down for 103, and Canterbury still required 140 with only an hour to plav. The batsmen made a belated effort to force the pace, but both Alpers and Dougalh went without scoring. J. C. Saunders was run out as the result of smart fielding by Howden, and when Arneson, at 23, played Begg on eight were down for 118. Only four runs were added before the remaining two wickets fell.
