CHARITABLE AID
TO THE EDITOR Sib, —I certainly do mean “to infer that some measure of deception is being attempted.” A deliberate attempt has been made by misrepresentation to infiuence the mind of the public against the members of the Hospital, Board. These are Moscow tactics, not British. Air Neilson says: "All I am out after is to see that those who go to the Hospital Board for assistance are supplied, etc., etc.” How noble! Anyone would think that nobody cared about the poor or did anything to help them until Air ■Neilson came on the scene, while all the time the work is being done, wisely, sympathetically, and efficiently, by just and honest men and women of integrity, many of whom were highly respected in Dunedin long before either Air Neilson or Air Silverstone were heard of. Large numbers of ratepayers, whose money goes to relieve distress, have to practise the strictest economy in order to pay the rates and so keep their own roofs over their heads. Alany of them do not spend as much per head per week on milk, meat, groceries, etc., as is given the applicants for relief. One wonders if Air Neilson has ever done anything personally for the sufferers besides talking and publicly shedding tears. —I am, etc., Anti-bunkum. TO THE EDITOR Sir, —“Who is Aly Neighbour?” Jesus answered in the parable of the good Samaritan, and in Hig representation of the last judgment. AIJ. along life’s dusty wayside lie wounded men and women robbed and left to die. We come continually upon them. Which role are we playing—the priest’s and Levite’s or the good Samaritan’s? You learned yesterday of a neighbour in trouble. It was in your thought to go to him to offer help. But you did not do it. The day closed and there was that btotherl.f kindness which you ought to have done left undone. Yonder at the ending of the. day your neighbour still bowed in the darkness beneath his burden, crushed, almost in despair. He might have been rejoicing if it had not been that you passed by on the other side. Even yet, after 19 centuries of Christian teaching, the world has yet to learn true answer to “ Who is mv neighbour?" and “How am I to love my neighbour? ” —I am, etc., James D. Brown. Mospiel. Alarch 19.
