OLYMPIC GAMES

WELLINGTON CENTRE’S DECISION NO ATHLETES NOMINATED (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 17. It is understood that the Wellington Amateur Athletic Centre does not intend nominating anyone from Wellington province for inclusion in New Zealand’s Olympic: Games team for Berlin this year. The view is held that, while there are some good performers in the province, none quite measures up to standard which it is felt should be observed in selecting Olympic Games representatives. NEW ZEALAND NOMINATIONS MATTHEWS AND LOVELOCK. (Pee; United Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 17. The council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association decided to nominate C. H. Matthews (Canterbury) and J. E. Lovelock (now in England) to the New Zealand Olympic Association for inclusion in the team for the Olympic Games at Berlin, Matthews for the 5000 Metres and 10,000 Metres with preference for the former, and Lovelock for the 1500 Metres and 5000 Metres. Other nominations by affiliated centres were not endorsed, the council holding that a man must have a reasonable chance of entering the last six in his event before being nominated. PUBLIC CRITICISM MR JNGRAM’S EXPLANATION. (Pee; United Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 17. Mr W. F. Ingram, replying to the complaint of the Canterbury Athletic Centre concerning his published criticisms of V. P. Boot, stated at the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association council meeting to-night that he had made it clear to the officials as soon as he arrived at the championship meeting that he was attending as a newspaper man, not as a member of the council. He denied that he had any bias against Boot or that he had imputed incompetency to the referee at the championship meeting, who might not have seen an incident that he saw. The letter of protest from the Canterbury Centre was received and no action was taken. The chairman, Mr H. I. Austad, said that the council had no jurisdiction over the private activities of a member.
