THE WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

Reports of meetings of branches are requested, but they should be furnished promptly, for the publication of reports that arc not supplied within a week from the date of the meeting cannot be assured. The annual meeting of the Clinton Women's Institute was held in the Oddfellows' Hall on Wednesday, Mrs Dickinson presiding. The motto was, "Do your best nnd leave the rest," and the roll call, "A suggestion to benefit the institute." Mrs Ayson, president of the South Otago Federation, gave an address. The following officers were elected: —President, Mrs Evans; secretary, Mrs Bateman; vice-presidents, Mrs Silcock and Miss Fraser; committee Mesdames Robertson, Harris, Copland and Steel, and Misses Kidd, W. Smith, Ritchie and Mayall. The hostesses were Mesdnmes West, Corbett and Walker. Mrs Copland presented Mrs Ayson, Mrs Dickinson (retiring president) and Mrs Bateman (secretary) with posies.

The annual meeting of the- Balelutha Women's Institute was held in St. Mark's Hall and presided over by Mrs J. D. Landels. The motto was, "By mutual confidences and the mutual aid great deeds are done and discoveries made." Mis Twecdie was appointed delegate to the South Otago Federation meeting. The president then presented the prizes won for various competitions during the year as follows:—Mrs Sutherland I, Miss Laing 2, and Mrs Parkinson 3. Miss Cnthie Newson sannr two songs. Mr _A. Parker, of the Singer Sewing Machine Company, gave a demonstration on the working of the machine and the various appliances that go with it, and was accorded a vote of thanks. The following were announced as members of the committee for the ensuing year:—Mesdames D. Mulvey (president), J. D. Landels, J. It. Copland, P. Mason, G. Guest, W. .Anderson, J. Sutherland, W. Stewart, M. Low, G. 11. Parkinson., C. Wyber and J. Smith. Mr A. Riach was reappointed auditor, and a vote of thanks accorded him for past services.

The annual meeting of Warepa Institute was held on Tuesday, with Mrs Cross. president, in the chair. The motto was, "You can move back, and you can move on, but you cannot stand still." Mrs Cross expressed thanks to all members of committee and institute for loyal sup; port and co-operation during her term of office as president. Mrs Findlay, on behalf of the institute, paid a tribute to the work of the retiring president, and moved a vote of thanks, which was carried with acclamation. The officers for the year were elected as follows:—President, Miss Heckler; vice-presidents. Mesdames M'lntosh and Russell; secretary, Mrs Stewart; Mrs Kerr; other members of committee—Mesdames Findlay. Milligan, Gross. Misses Collins and E. F. Ayson. Mrs M'lntosh wa s re-elected secretary for "Home and Country"; Miss Eileen Ayson, competitions secretary, and Miss Ellen Gordon, librarian. Miss Heckler was appointed as delegate to the annual meeting of South Otago District Federation in Balelutha on April 17. The first prize for points in competitions for the vear was won by Mrs Shanks and Miss M. K. Ayson (equal), with Mrs Miller

second, and Miss Heckler third. In the competition for best pot of apple jelly, Mrs Shanks was placed first, Mrs Find-, lay second, Miss Shanks third. Suggestions for improving our Women's Institute meetings were given in response to the roll call. During the" social half-hour Mrs M'lntosh and Miss Eileen Ayson gave a playette, "The Reason Why." Hostesses were Mesdames Bringans and Cross and Miss Heckler.

At the annual meeting of the Milford Institute, Mrs A. R. Guild presided. The resignation of Miss M. Macaulay as secretery was accepted with regret. The officers elected for the year were: —President, Mrs A. R. Guild (re-elected); treasurer, Mrs A. Brown; secretary. Miss B. Woodhead; vice-presidents Mesdames Caithness, Chester, and D. Brown; committee —Mesdames G. Parke. R. Prattley, G. Simpson, A. D. Crossman, E. Macaulay. 1, Miss M. M'Cormick 2, Mis s H. Prattley Mrs J. Proudlock was elected a new member. At the fifth annual meeting of the Mount Nessing Institute Mrs 11. Irving presided. Mrs Fisher reviewed the activities of last year. Mrs Knubley and Miss P. Brown were appointed delegates to attend the annual meeting of the South Canterbury Federation to be held at Geraldine in April, and Mesdames P. Kidd and Stevenson were appointed to take charge of the institute's bay at the federation meeting. It was decided to form a link with the Pentraeth Institute, Isle of Anglesey, Wales. Mrs and Miss Austin, who leave shortly for Great Britain, were the recipients of gifts. The following committee were elected for the ensuing year:—Mesdames H. Fisher, W. Brown, J. Glass, R. Irving, P. Kidd, W. Stevenson, and G. Waters. Mrs R. Irving was re-elected president. Mrs Taylor demonstrated the preserving of autumn leaves and the making of a wreath and a bouquet. The competitions resulted: — Smocking: Miss P. Brown 1, Miss Wakes 2, Miss E. Kidd 3. Roses: Mrs Glass 1, Mrs R. Irving 2, Mrs H. Fisher 3, Cream puffs: Mrs Glass 1, Miss Waters 2 and 3. The prizes for the year's competitions were presented by Mrs H. Fisher, as follows:—Mrs R. Irving's challenge cup for most points—Mrs J. Glass, 79 points (Mrs Austin's prize): second highest points—Mrs W.Brown 42 (Mrs Fisher's prize); third—Mrs J. Perry and Mrs Austin (equal) 39 points. Mrs J. C. Macaulay's trophy for most first prizes was won by Mrs Perry. Mrs P. Kidd's prize for the girl under 21 years with most points was won by Miss W. Waters with 36 points. The hostesses were Mesdames J. Mann and W. Simpson. Miss P. Brown was in charge at the sales table and Miss N. Dale presided at the piano.

Mise Ludemann occupied the chair at the annual meeting of the Papakaio Institute. The members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the late King It was decided to forward a letter of appreciation to Mrs G. Wilson of her services when a member of the institute. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: —President, Miss iVI. Ludemann; secretary, Miss B. Borrie; treasurer, Miss R. T. Wilson; sales table. Miss D. Ludemann; competitions. Miss M. Paton. The speakers to the Golden Thread were Mrs Paton, who gave a description of a trip to Greymonth, and Mrs Sanders, who chose Wairaki, Rotorua, the Geyser Valley, and Huka Falls as her subject" Mrs D. M. Borrie and Miss M Vie were hostesses. The social part of the afternoon comprised a song by Misses M'Vie and Gray, and game and competitions arraneed by Mesdames R. T. Wilson and M. Nimmo. The results of the competitions are as follow:—Sponge roll. Mrs J. Gibson 1, Mrs O'Dell 2: three asters, Mrs Wilson I, Mrs Cray and Mrs Gibson (equal) 2.

At the annual meeting of the Glenavy Institute, Mrs Miller (president) occupied the chair. The roll call was "A tea dish for a cold night.'" The new committee was elected, and Mrs Hamilton was appointed president. A presentation of a crystal jellv dish was made to Mrs Miller by Miss M'Loan. who expressed appreciation of the manner in which Mrs Miller had carried out her duties as president. The monthly meeting of the Windsor Park Women's Institute was presided over by Mrs Webster. The roll call was "A favourite vegetable." Miss Carrodus (Eveline Institute) then gave a demonstration on "Making bouquets," and was ac-

corded a vote of thanks. The competitions were judged by Miss Carrodus, assisted by Mrs Carrodus (Windsor), and resulted as follows:—Butter sponge, Mrs M'lntyre 1, Mrs Johnstone 2; patchwork cushion, Mrs Coughlan 1, Mrs Watson 2; bottle of gooseberries, Mrs J. Turnbull 1, Mrs Watson 2. Mesdames M'Kenzie, M. Fallon, and W. Fallon were hostesses.

The Tomahawk Institute's annual election took place on Wednesday. The personnel of the 1936 executive is as follows: President, Mrs R. B. Mathieson (reelected) ; vice-president, Mrs T. Dickson; acting secretary, Mrs G. Simon; treasurer, Mrs E. King; committee—Mesdames 1 Anderson. Dickson. W. Harbrow, Henderson, Hill, E. King, T. King, Mathieson, Neilly Simon, and Smaill.

At the annual meeting of the Hunter Women's Institute the following officers were elected for the year:—President, Mrs Wallace; vice-president, Miss M. Neal; committee —Mrs Ayrey, Mrs Barclay, Mrs W. Gibson, Mrs King, Miss Anstey. Miss. Gunn; treasurer, Miss Shears; secretary, Miss Cooper;_ assistant secretary, MiGg Milne; reception member, Mr Morrison, sales table, Miss A. Cooper; competition stewards, Mrs -Barclay and Miss W Gunn.

The Benhar Institute met on Tuesday. The annual elections resulted: — Miss L» Anderson (re-elected); vice-presi-dents, Mrs Murdoch and Miss Johnstone (re-elected); secretary, Miss Lawrence; treasurer, Mrs Williams; committee— Mesdames Willoeks, Twaddle, G. Park, Sutherland, W. Budge, and Williams. The roll call was a riddle and the motto " It is worth £IOOO to have the habit of looking on the bright side of life." The competition, " Best pot of apple jelly." was won by Mrs T. Lawrence, Mrs Williams second, and Mrs Willoeks third. The hostesses were Mrs W. Budge and Miss Caskie.

* * * At the Roxburgh Institute monthly meeting Mrs Granani (president) presided. The special business was a lecture on " Belgium" by Mrs J. A. Jull, of Palmerston, a former resident of the district. Having received her education in Belgium she was in a position to give first-hand information of the customs and conditions of •that country and its people. Mrs Jull was accorded a vote of thanks on the motion of Mrs R. Tamblyn, who also presented her with a bouquet of flowers. Mrs Graham, president, was also presented with a bouquet.

The annual meeting of the Kyeburn Institute was held in the Hall on Wednesday,. Mrs Carey presiding. Mrs Carey thanked all members for their- help during the year. A vote of thanks was_ accorded all office-bearers of the previous year. The following were elected to the new committee: —Mesdames Clunie, Connor. Helm, W. Mathewson, J. Mathewson, A. L. Pearson, W. W. Pearson, Preston, and Young, and Misses _E. Crutchley_ and I. Pearson. The election for president resulted in Mrs A. W. Pearson for the ensuing year. Mesdames L. Mathewson and Connor were elected vice-presidents. Hostesses were Mesdame A.' B. Hore nnd Connor and Miss Bertha Reid.

Tlic annual meeting of the Dunback Institute was held on Wednesday afternoon. An election of office-bearers for the ensuing year was conducted and resulted as follows:—President, Miss Bell; vicepresidents, Mrs He-.vett and Miss Wilson; secretary and treasurer, Mrs Kelly; members of committee—Mesdames Matheson, Stone, M'Millan, Chaston, Murphy, and Farquharson. Prizes were presented to those gaining most points for competitions during the year, Mrs Matheson being first, and Miss I. Pringle second. The competition for the day, "An article suitable for display," was won "by Miss I. Pringle with Miss N. Pringle second. Mrs Hewett presented Mrs Kelly with a shoulder spray as a token of appreciation of her work as president for the preceding year. The hostesses for the day were Mesdames Dunmead, Farquharson, and M'lntosh, and Misses M. and G. M'lntosh.
