THE LABOUR CABINET

ADMINISTRATIVE WORK IMPORTANT DECISIONS GUARANTEED PRICES POLICY (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 9. Important decisions will be reached at a scries of Cabinet meetings to be held this week. The first meeting will be commenced at 10 o’clock to-morrow morning and Ministers will face an agenda that will keep them fully occupied for a few days. So far Cabinet has been mainly occupied deciding on ways and means of giving effect to the policy which the Labour Party placed before the electors and there has been little time to devote to administrative work. This week, however, Cabinet will turn its attention to questions affecting the control of the Public Service and the Government of the mandated territory of Western Samoa, as wadi as other matters. The appointment of a public service commissioner or commissioners will come up for consideration as will the selection of the administrator of Samoa. The appointment of two Government directors on the Board of Directors of the Bank of New Zealand will also be made by Cabinet this week and the selection of 10 new Legislative Councillors will be completed. In addition to the administrative questions mentioned Cabinet will shortly be called upon to discuss the most important feature of its economic policy—the application of guaranteed prices. A committee of departmental heads and experts has been engaged on the problem for a number of weeks and it has now submitted its report to the Minister of Finance, Mr W. Nash, whose duty P will be to submit the proposals to Cabinet. It is understood that the committee has not recommended any definite scheme but has submitted several alternative schemes to the Minister, whose task it will be to make a selection of the one he considers to he best suited to New Zealand’s needs. Once the selection has been made it will be necessary to work out the scheme in greater detail than has yet been attempted.
