DIPLOMAT'S ADVENTURE

Sir Eric Teichmun, Chinese Counsellor to the British Embassy at Peking, who has travelled overland to India from China across the " roof of the world, described hig adventurous journey on arrival at New Delhi. He crossed 3000 miles of scorching plains and frozen highlands to visit India rather than travel to Europe in comfort by the transSiberian railway. " I was unable to use motor tracks beyond Kashgar, Eastern Turkestan, where the only means of transport is by pack animal," he said. " Leaving Kashgar on December 10, I had a good journey for four weeks until I reached Gilgit, in Kashmir, in spite of the extreme cold of the mountains of Pamirs, where the temperature fell to 20deg. below zero at night. From Gilgit 1 flew at a height of 15,500 ft and had wonderful views of Nnngaparbat and other peaks of the Karakoram range in the Western Himalayas. I was able to accomplish in 2J hours the aerial journey to Rawalpindi which by pack animal would have taken 16. days. Moreover, the Burzil Pass would have been impassable owing to thousands of feet of snow."
