Mr J. S. Hislop left by the through express yesterday for Wellington. Mr C. Draper left by the first express yesterday for Wellington to join the Ruahine en route to England. Mr F. T. Anderson left yesterday for Wellington to join the Ruahine for England. Mr W. Garrett was a passenger by the through express yesterday en route to England. Mr F, G. Nind, chief postmaster at Timaru, has been appointed to take the place of Mr N. R. M'lsaacs, chief postmaster at Invercargill, who was recently transferred to Dunedin. Mr T. Lindsay Buick arrived in Dunedin yesterday from the north, and will leave on his return to-morrow morning. General Sir Cyril N. Macmullen, G.C.8., C.M.G., C.1.E., D. 5.0., Cora-mander-in-Chief of the Eastern Command, of India, is at present visiting Major Mackenzie at Walter Peak station. Mr J. A. C. M'Cartney, M.Sc., of Mataura, an ex-pupil of the school, has been appointed to fill a vacancy on the staff of the Gore High School caused by the appointment of Mr D. G. Grant to the West Christchurch High School. A presentation to Mr J. G. Coates and Mrs Coates took place at Selwyn Park, Dargaville, on Monday afternoon. The presentation to Mr Coates, which was made by Mr A. E. Harding, former member for Kaipara, took the form of an album enclosing an illuminated address, in which provision had been made for the signatures of friends and supporters. Mr Coates was also presented with a wallet containing a cheque for a substantial sumThe period of service of Commander B. C. B. Brooke, 'in command of H.M.S. Philomel, and as officer in charge of the Devonport Naval Base, will expire shortly (says a Press Association telegram from Auckland) and Commander Brooke will return to England in about a month. He will be relieved by Commander 0. B. Tinley, who will arrive in New Zealand prior to Commander Brooke’s departure. Commander Brooke was appointed to the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy in August, 1933. The Union airliner Korimako left Taieri airport at 11.30 a.m. yesterday with Messrs H. W. Brooks, P. Campbell and R. A. S, Mason for Wellington. The Karoro arrived from the north at 12.45 p.m. with Mr N. M’Kinnell from Wellington and Mr F. S. Avent from Christchurch. The Karoro left Taieri at 2.36 p.m. on a practice flight to Invercargill, the following passengers making the trip;—Mrs W. B. Cunningham, Miss Shepherd, Mr A. N. Patterson, and Mr C. Stevens. Invercargill was reached at 3.27 p.m. After an inspection of the Southland Aero Club’s aerodrome the return journey was commenced at 4 p.m., the plane arriving at Taieri at 4.50 p.m. Professor P. L. W. Wood, according to an announcement by the Dominion Council of the League of Nations Union, has accepted the presidency of the New Zealand League of Nations Union as successor to the Rev. P. H, Wilkinson, no\v resident at Timaru. Professor Wood occupies the chair of history at Victoria University College, and is well known for his radio talks on international subjects. He is an Australian by birth, and was formerly a member of the League of Nations Union at Sydney, in which position he accomplished much valuable work for the New South Wales branch. Prior to his departure for England on holiday Mr P. T. Anderson, local manager of the Standard Insurance Company, Ltd., was met by members of the head office and Dunedin branch staffs in the board room of the company, Lower High street. Mr A. H. Fisher, general manager, in a happy speech, presented Mr Anderson with a gold wristlet watch and extended to him best wishes for a pleasant holiday. An appropriate reply was made by Mr Anderson.
