ST. CLAIR CARNIVAL
EFFORT SUCCESSFULLY CONCLUDED ",/ The carnival organised by the, St.. Clair Improvement Society was brought: to a successful conclusion on Saturday Might when, despite the wet weather, there was another large 'attendance of the public. The afternoon session ,alsfl> attracted a large crowd of visitors, who derived considerable amusement from, the children's treasure hunt on the beach, & sand modelling competition! and tricycle races. In the treasure hunt one boy employed a-fox terrier in his-en-deavours to unearth the treasure.and another made an unexpected find in th» shape of an envelope containing a receipt for 17s and the sum of 3s, which h» returned to the organiser's office. j.. The unpleasant flying, conditions in the early evening did not prevent Elyingofficer Campbell from repeating his spectacular " rescue," which was 'a featurd of the opening night of the carnival. Roaring low over the heads of the crowd, lie flew out to sea towards White-:lsland, located the "lost" boat, and dropped parachutes .giving the position of"; the " derelict," and the direction to ba' taken by the rescuers. Other attractions; a.t'the evening sessioji included a march past by four teams froni the St. Clair a,nd St. Kilda Life Saving Clubs, and; a, life-sskving exhibition by the 'team which won the * Neyr. Zealajid Life Saving championship. The various stalls and competitions again did excellent, business throughout the .day, and ■ thol Otago Regimental Band provided an enjoyable' programme of music; -' ■ - -
