MISHAP TO ENGINE
WELLINGTON-NAPIER EXPRESS ' * CONNECTING ROD BREAKS (Pee United Press Association) NAPIER, February 19. The Wellington-Napier express had a fortunate escape to-night about two and, a-half miles north of Otane, 25 miles from Hastings. One of the connecting rods snapped off at one end and the tough, thick piece of steel became a flail, which threshed about, finally coming into contact with a concrete culvert. The driver managed to effect temporary repairs, but the train was nearly two hours late. At the time the rod snapped the train was travelling at something like 40 miles an hour, and it was fortunate that the steel arm was not violently inserted in one of the wheels of the engine. The driver pulled up promptly, the rod was removed, and the engine was able to proceed slowly to Hastings and thence to Napier, where it will be overhauled and a new rod fitted.
A cursory examination to-night did not disclose major damage to the engine.
