Vice-Regal. The Governor-General, Viscount Galway, and Viscountess Galway, were welcomed to the Urewcra Country by a large gathering of the Tuhoe tribe at Waikirikiri on Tuesday afternoon (reports a Press Association telegram from Whakatane). The Vice-regal party will spend several days fishing in the rivers of Vi'hakatane Valley. Addresses were given by four chiefs —Takarua, Taiakoa, Mika, and Trainer, which were followed by a haka of welcomed The little daughter of Chief Trainor, Kohine, on behalf of the tribe, presented His Excellency with a carved walking stick and Viscountess Galway with a pin piu. The party was also entertained at afternoon tea at the Maori meeting house.

Captain Coll' M'Douakl returned to Dunedin from Wellington by the through express last night. Dr J. W. Bridgman, medical superintendent of the Grey Hospital, has tendered his resignation to the board, to take effect in three months. Messrs A. Campbell, P. Neilson, J. W. Munro, and W. Denham (Invercargill),' M.P.’e, were passengers for Wellington by the through express yesterday. Mr A. Mumford, general manager of the National Insurance Company, left with his wife and daughter by the through express - yesterday en route to a visit to England. Newall, secretary of the South Island Retail Fruiterers’ Federation, returned yesterday from Wellington after attending a conference of retail fruiterers as the result of which various matters affecting the trade generally were made the subject of a deputation to the Prime Minister (Mr M. J. Savage). Mr N. R. MTsaac, chief post-master at Invercargill, has been appointed chief post-master at Dunedin in succession to Mr J. Madden, who was recently appointed chief post-master in Wellington. Mr M’lsaac had bad a long and varied experience in the Postal Department and is interested in many phases of sport. A Press Association cable message from London stales that Mr Stanley Bruce, on behalf or the League Council, has appointed Major-general Sir Neill Malcolm High Commissioner for German refugees, in place of Mr M'Donald, who recently resigned. A Press Association cable message from London states that Messrs Algernon Newton and T. C. Dugdale have been elected Associates of the Royal Academy. Messrs L. F. Ensor, M.A. Dip. E.D., and R. Fraser, M.A. 8.C0m., were yesterday appointed by the Otago High Schools’ Board to positions on the staff of King’s High School. Mr Ensor is at present on the staff of the Waimate High School, and Mr Fraser is on the staff of the Otago Boys’ High School. A Press Association cablegram from Melbourne states that Sir Claude Reading. chairman of the Commonwealth Bank, will sail for London on March 17. The Union airliner Kotuku left Taieri airport at 11.30 a.m. yesterday for Palmerston North, via Christchurch and Blenheim, with the following passengers: Mr and Mrs J. A. Sligo and Mr C. I. Walton for Christchurch, Miss B. Barr for Blenheim, and Mr Hales Walker for Palmerston North. The south-bound airliner, the Karoro, arrived at Taieri at 1.5 p.m. without passengers for Dun? edin. Gabled advice has been received that Air Alan Macfarlane, of Clydevale, who left for England early in December, has passed his final test and will enter the Royal Air Force in March. The young aviator is a member of the Otago Aero Club, and was among the successful competitors for the Otago Daily Times Scholarship last year. He subsequently qualified for his A licence under Flight-lieutenant Olsen at Taieri. . Lord Nuffield, head of the Morns Motor Works, England, who is visiting Australia and New Zealand, as part of a 30,000 miles world goodwill tour of firms distributing the products of his factories, reached Darwin by the Marella on Thursday of last week. Lord Nuffield said that the return of normal financial conditions to' England last year had resulted in a 30 per cent, improvement in car registrations, and that 1935 was the best year known by the industry. A Press Association message from Wellington states that Mr C. Robertson, at present headmaster of Berhariipore School, has been appointed to the inspectorate,, and will be stationed in the Wellington Education Board’s district. Mr E. S. Andrews has been appointed assistant secretary of the New Zealand Educational Institute and editor of National Education in succession to Mr A. E. Campbell, who has been appointed a full-time lecturer on education at Victoria University College. Mr O. A. Banner, the present headmaster of the Lyall Bay School, has been appointed headmaster of the Kelburn Normal School, and Mr T. Kane, headmaster of the Hataitai School, has been appointed the teachers’ representative on the Superannuation Board in succession to Mr Robertson. Mr A. E. Talbot, manager of the Christchurch branch of the Phoenix Assurance Company, Ltd., will retire on superannuation at the end of February, and he has been appointed a local director as from that time. He has been associated with the company since he became district manager 36 years ago. Six years ago a branch office was established at Christchurch and Mr Talbot was appointed manager. He intends to spend Ins retirement in Christchurch. He will be succeeded as manager of the Christchurch branch by Mr G. C. Lezard, of the Wellington office. The regret of the Otago High Schools’ Board at the death of hie Majesty King George V was expressed in the following resolution, passed at the meeting of the board yesterday:—“The Otago High Schools’ Board of Governors joins with all sections and institutions the great British Commonwealth of Nations in recording its sorrow at the death of on" well-beloved King George _V, who had endeared himself to all his subjects by his high qualities as a ruler and as a man. Among the, long line of Sovereigns who have occupied the throne of this our land his late Majesty distinguished '-hnself bv his devotion to duty, by the '■igli ideals he held of the arduous functions of his office, and by the wisdom he showed on great occasions. To his Majesty King Edward VIII the board respectfully tenders its enthusiastic loyalty and its wishes for a long, happy and successful reign.” A travelling scholarship in architecture has been awarded to a young Auckland architect, Mr Clifford Sanderson, by the University of New Zealand. This is the second award in architecture that has been made by the University, the first being about four years ago. Mr Sanderson proposes to leave Auckland by the Wanganella on February 29 for Sydney, where he will connect with the Orion and sail for England. Mr Sanderson was born in Dunedin and attended the Otago Boye’ High School, and subsequently the University of Otago. He then went to Auckland, and in 1932 graduated bachelor of architecture at Auckland University College. Since then he has been in private practice. Ho is an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architests and an Associate of the New Zealand Institute of Architects.
