PRICE PROBLEMS

BRIDGING THE GAP OF COSTS VIEWPOINT OF FARMERS' UNION (Pee United Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 18. Mr A. P. O'Shea, Dominion secretary of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, eaid to-day in explanation of the statement made to Cabinet by the union that.it was primarily intended to draw attention to the gap between the retail prices of farmers' purchases in New Zealand and the export price which the farmer obtained for his produce. He stressed the fact that the union was still of the opinion that reductions in tariffs and costs were the soundest course for the ccuT.try to take to bridge that gap, but that, as it appeared that the Government was likely to adopt another course, the union believed that the price which the farmer obtained for his produce should be a compensating price which would take into account the high prices m New Zealand and the low prices obtainable for export produce. The union also wished to draw attention to the danger of New Zealand trying to depart from' the idea of an economy based mainly on agricultural and pastoral industries.
