OBITUARY
MR T. E. JEFCOATE The death occurred at Wanganui on Thursday last of Mr T. E. Jefcoate, who was for 20 years chief stock buyer for the New Zealand Refrigerating Company. Before going to the North Island, for health reasons, Mr Jefcoate resided at Lochindorb Station, Clutha district, and later was with Messrs Strouach, Morris, and Co. Mr Jefcoate was a very popular figure at the various places where he worked, and he was highly esteemed. He was known throughout New Zealand as a capable show judge ,of horses, cattle, and sheep. He is survived by his widow, one son, and one daughter* ' ' ■' MR A. M'EWAN Mr Archibald M'Ewan, a well-known and highly respected old resident of Balclutha, died suddenly at' his home at North Balclutha on Monday, at the age of 73 years. Mr M'Ewan for many years carried on a blacksmith's and. wheelwright's business at Balclutha on the site now occupied by Stevenson's motor garage. Retiring from that business, he engaged in bridge building, and he helped to build many structures for the Bruce and Clutha County Councils and others. Mr M'Ewan came from Scotland about 50 years ago, and his first job in New Zealand was as blacksmith on Begg's station. At Purakanui some 40 years ago he purchased Mr Hugh Nelson's blacksmith's business at Balclutha, which he carried on successfully for a number of years. He was of a kind and genial nature, a keen angler, and had many friends. His health was excellent, Tight up to the time of his death, and he was among those present at the Early Settlers' picnic on Friday. A slight attack of influenza followed, and it was from that he succumbed on Monday night. He leaves a widow and a family of four—Mrs Peak (Waikaka), Mrs Falconer (Mataura), Mr lan M'Ewan (manager of the Pukeuri freezing works, Oamaru), and Mr Archibald M'Ewan (Balclutha).
