POSITION IN GERMANY
ARRESTS.OF CATHOLICS REPLY TO THE PROTEST (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, February 17. (Received Feb. 18, at 11.55 p.m.) The Daily Telegraph's Cologne correspondent says: " Herr Hitler, replying to Cardinal Schultze's protest against Catholics being arrested, says he is unable to intervene owing to the serious political charges involved. He replied similarly to the Papal Nuncio, who protested on behalf of the Pope. It is, however, understood that there will not be a grand political trial as, despite ruthless examination of the accused, only flimsy evidence' was obtained. Moreover, Herr Hitler has decided that, in view of the Catholics' special position, he does not wish the high treason.laws stretched too far." ,
