AUSTRALIA AGAIN
EASY WIN IN FOURTH TEST SEVEN WICKETS TO GRIMMETT (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) JOHANNESBURG, February 17... The fourth test ended in an easy win for Australia by an innings and 184 runs, due to the devastating bowling of Grimmett, O'Reilly, and M'Cormick. Australia thus wins the rubber. Australia's first innings totalled 439, the outstanding feature being O'Reilly's hurricane 56 not out, including two sixes. However, he was missed three times. Oldfield also gave a breezy display for 44. The African's second innings opened dramatically. Siedle was clean bowled by first ball, and Wade went with the fourth ball of his next over. Viljoen received a nasty knock on the left hip from M'Cormick, delaying play for five minutes. When he returned from the pavilion he collected seven runs, and then, in attempting a big hit, was smartly stumped. Notirse was bowled first ball, the score being four for 24. Harvey brightened the play and hit Grimmett into the members' stand. He later attempted to hit Grimmett out of the ground, but Darling held a brilliant cateh on the square-leg boundary. Nicholson leaped out at Grimmett, mistimed the stroke, and was completely bowled. Mitchell was playing solidly, and was not allowing himself to be overawed, but Langton hit hard on occasions.
The score began to mount until Langton was beaten by a low, straight ball. , Nupen hit Grimmett for six, but was bowled next ball. Mitchell manoeuvred for the strike and the game slowed down. The end came when Davies was caught at the wicket.
A feature of the innings was the brilliant wicketkeeping of Oldfield, who was in great form the whole match. Both teams gathered in the dressing room. The Australians were congratulated and their healths were toasted in champagne. Wade paid a tribute to the Australians' attack. He said it was truly wonderful, and he considered M'Cormick the most improved player. Richardson said: "I am delighted at winning the ashes. I could not have wished for greater loyalty from the team, which is a great combination. M'Cormick was a big factor in our victory. The Africans were great sportsmen and great triers."
