OTAGO POWER BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Otago Electric Power Board was held yesterday at Milton. Th6re were present: Messrs D. Boyd (in the chair), W. Lee, W. C. Arkle, A. E. Russell, T.Lowis, R. H. Michelle, and G. Moore. MOTIONS OF SYMPATHY. Motions of sympathy were carried with Mr J. K. Simpson in his illness and with Mr W. H. Bayly, a member of the board's staff at Owaka, who had met with an accident while working on the power lines. FINANCE. : The following were the financial transactions of the board for the month of January:— Receipts.—Cash sales. £2 8s 6d; consumers' deposits, £18; unemployment refund, f 9 2s; contractor's deposits, £27; insurance refund, £2- ■ 16s 2d; sundry debtors, £124 3s lOd; electricity, £3052 10s 7d;—total, f 3236 l s Id. Expenditure, £10,082 9s lid. Electricity cash receipts to January 21, £35,002, compared with £31,663 in 1933, £32,450 in 1934, and £33,084' in 1935.

The report was adopted. Accounts totalling £1352 18s 3d wero passed for payment. ENGINEER'S REPORT.

The engineer (Mr R. D. Veitch) reported as follows: —" In and around Lawrence 14 services have been renewed and one altered to suit a telephone crossing. At Bowler's Creek and Blue Spur, low tension has received attention. At Waitahuna, earths have been repaired and street lights have received attention.

In Owaka district one new service has been run. insulators have been changed on an 11,000 volt feeder at Glenomaru, and a bank of transformers has been replaced at Romahapa. Low tension at Paretai and Owaka has been repaired. Poles have been carted from Stirling for an extension in Owaka Valley. In Balclutha district five services have been run and service maintenance performed, induing a considerable amount of low tension retying. On Inch Clutha one transformer fuse has been replaced and three have been cut. Following a gale, the Finegand-Owaka line was repaired near Glenomaru.

In Milton iow tension to the railway pump has been re-strained. Eight 11,000volt fuses have been made and three transformers conditioned for. Adams Flat extension. An 11,000-volt line has been run to Adams Flat gold mine and a substation erected to supply current to it. In the northern area recent interruptions to the supply have been traced to a defective make of fuse, nil of which are being replaced. Three 33.000-volt insulators on the Port Ghalmers-Waitati line have been changed and the line has been tested for further faulty insulators. Repairs have been carried out to the telephone lines and also to the 11,000-volt line at Karitane. Transformers on the Goodwood-, Palmerston line have been painted and trees cut back. Poles in this vicinity have been reblocked and conductors resagged. Fuse buses have been renewed at Goodwood. In Palmerston low-ten-sion poles have been reblocked and three new services erected. Meter reading has occupied a considerable amount of time, and the annual holidays have also had an effect on the quantity of work performed. The report was adopted. Mr Veitch also reported that the number of units purchased in January was the largest for one month since the inception of the board. CORRESPONDENCE.

The clerk of the Brucj County Council wrote advising that the council had granted the board permission to .cut back branches and trees which interfered with the power lintp.— Keceived.

The secretary of the Centra] Hawke's Bay Electric Power Board wrote forwarding a circular which had been sent to all schools in his board's area drawing the children's attention to the danger of touching wires hanging from electric poles or lying on the ground.—The letter tvas received, and it was decided that similar circulars be sent to all schools in the board's area. The electrical engineer of the Dunedin City Council wrote advising that during January 342,400 unite had been supplied from Waipori for the I'orthern area and 381,880 units for the southern area.—Keceived. GENERAL. It was decided that the Public Trustee be appointed commissioner for the sinking fund on the board's conversion loan.
