LINER RUNS ASHORE

THE WINCHESTER CASTLE JAGGED HOLE IN BOWS LONDON, February 17. (Received Feb. 18, at 0.15 a.m.) The Daily Mail says: " Returning home by the luxury liner Winchester Castle, 338 passengers had an unexpected thrill when in darkness, dense fog and rain squalls she ran ashore on rocks off Black Nore Fort, Portland. The liner sent out distress signals, and a destroyer, the Winehelsea lifeboat, and tugs hurried to the rescue. The Winchester Castle, after three hours, wrenched herself free, tearing a jagged hole in the bows. Moving slowly stern first, the liner was escorted by the destroyer and tugs to Weymouth."
