AMATEUR ATHLETICS

■ -«©. .—■ '. EVENING TRIAL MEETING Although a slight drizzle and a cold temperature made conditions unpleasant, the trial meeting held on the Carisbrook Ground last evening,by. the Otago Centre of "the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association provided many excellent races. The tracks, although heavy after the rain, were in much better condition than those of the Caledonian Ground, but their stick}', nature and the heavy atmosphere were not conducive. to. fast times. On account, of the slippery surface, no field events were held, ahd several flat races were cancelled. ".,.'',' '',' The outstanding performance at the meeting was that of T. Allen in the 880 Yards Handicap. The Otago champion covered the distance in Imm v 59 2-ssec, which, considering the conditions, must make him one of the most favoured contenders for the national title this year. Milner showed consistently good form over -the 120 Yards Hurdles, his two runs taking 16sec and 16. l-ssec, He was not extended, in either trial, and his present form augurs well for his euccess at the national meeting. . ] B L. In the final, which was hot run in lanes, he was blocked when running very strongly. : A. R. Geddes ran a solid three miles, which took 15min 3Gsec, and Gibbons also ran a (rood race to take second place. J. G. Barnes showed a return to form to win the Mile Handicap, and R.
