ST. KILDA COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING The fortnightly meeting of the St. K'ilda Borough Council was held last night. The Deputy Mayor (Cr Glue) presided, and there were also present: Crs Davidson, Hinton, Brent, Roy, Anderson, Cherry, Lovell, and Rutherford. CORRESPONDENCE. The Under-secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs forwarded a copy of the New Zealand Gazette containing an Order-in-Council adding the boroughs of St; Kilda and Green Island to the Dunedin Metropolitan Fire -District as from March 31 next. —Received. INSPECTOR'S REPORT. The borough inspector (Mr D. Mann) reported that during the past fortnight 11 drivers' licences had been issued. Two building permits had been issued. —Approved. FOREMAN'S REPORT.. The'borough foreman (Mr John Clyma) reported that during the past fortnight the stall* had been engaged in tar-sealing 42 chains of Forbury crescent, grading Victoria street, sweeping channels, cleaning drains, etc. He suggested that the penetration of Victoria road should be commenced next Monday. The report was approved. , . ■ FINANCE. The Finance Committee reported that the receipts for the past fortnight had totalled £3300 lis 10d, aud that after the payment of accounts amounting to £4132 16s 6d, there would be a credit balance of £774 ss. The sum of £3028 12s Id had already been paid towards the accounts. Cr Anderson, chairman of the Finauce Committee, said that a total of £3309 had come in from rates during the past fortnight. Although a good deal «f money was coming in, it must not be thought that it was all profit. An amount of £668 had to be paid to the Drainage Board, and in the near future a payment of £660 would have to be made for hospital purposes.

The report was approved. DEFAULTING RATEPAYERS.

The town clerk said there was an amount of £774' 16s outstanding from the 1933-34 rates, and as the time for payment of the 1935-36 rates without penalties would soon have elapsed, he suggested that the borough solicitors should be asked to collect the rates for 1933-34, 1034-35, and 1935-36. The matter was referred to the Finance Committee. BOROUGH WATER MAINS. In connection with the question of the repair or renewal of the borough water mains, the borough plumber reported that a test of the drains in Begg street, had been carried out.

Cr Hinton said that the committee appointed to go into that matter'had not been idle, and the activity in Begc street had been carried out with the object of ascertaining the state of the flow. On his'motion, the report of the plumber and also correspondence dealing with the matter were referred to the committee. WATER CONSUMPTION.

It was reported that the water consumption during the past two weeks had been as follows:—First week, 1,982,000 gallons, at a cost of £49 lis; second w.eek, 1.833,000 gallons, at a cost of £45 16s 6d—a total of 3.815,000 gallons, at a cost of £95 7s 6d. The cost of the previous fortnight's water had been £llO lis Approved.
