MOTOR LICENCES

DECEMBER’S BIG INCREASES Registrations of motor vehicles during December, which is the peak buying month in the year, reached a point which has been exceeded only three times in any month since the inception of the Motor Vehicles Act in 1924, according to the motor registration branch of the Post Office. The registrations were; Cars, 2196; commercial vehicles, 812; motor cycles, 290; total, 3298. The number of licensed cars has increased by 9.23 per cent., and commercial vehicles by a larger proportion, namely, 9.97 per cent., but the number of motor cycles licensed has declined by 2.27 per cent. The principal increases in car licenses occurred in the following districts; — Auckland, 2716; Wellington, 1679; Christchurch, 1411; Hamilton, 1170: Palmerston North, 792; Dunedin, 700. The districts enumerated also show substantial increases in the number of commercial vehicles licensed. The greatest percentage, increases hava occurred in the North Island, comparative figures being: Cars —North Island 10.28, South Island 7.35; commercial vehicles—North Island 10.22, South Island 9.51. The decrease in the number of motor cycles was greater in the South Island, namely, 2.97 per cent., compared with 1.84 per cent, in the North Island.
