Mr Werrlng, who arrived in Melbourne by the motor ship Tudor, accompanied by his wife, a granddaughter of the founder of the company said that the recent statements by Mr Alexander Shaw, chairman of the P. and O. Company, might have given the Impression that all non-British lines were subsidised, but that was Incorrect. “ Subsidies have a very demoralising effect on shipping,’ said Mr Werrlng, " and tend to keep uneconomical tonnage In commission.”
