WAIMATE

High School Pupils Pupils attending the Waimate High School will in future be permitted to travel free of charge on the railway bus between Studhohne and Waimate. This advice, which was received on Thursday evening from the Minister of Education (Mr P. Fraser) by the secretary of the High School Board (Mr S. Grut), removes an anomaly against which the board has directed persistent efforts ever since the abolition of the railway passenger service between Waimate and Studhohne and the inauguration of the railway bus service six years ago. Up to the present the parents of pupils travelling by the railway bus were required to pay an extra charge of Is 6d a week for each pupil, in spite of the fact that the pupil would be able to travel to Timaru free of charge. Secondary school pupils residing in the Waimate district have been induced to travel to Timaru in preference to paying the added charge for the shorter distance to Waimate. while potential pupils have been obliged to forgo a secondary education, being unable to meet the additional expense.
