PALMERSTON SHOW

HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE CATTLE AND HORSE ENTRIES IMPROVE POORER SHOWING OF SHEEP The fifty-fifth annual summer show of the Palmerston and Waihemo County Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held yesterday at Palmerston. The weather conditions were excellent and the crowd was very satisfactory, the gate receipts,' amounting to £75, which is several pounds in advance of the takings last year. Entries, on the whole, were good, the cattle and draught horse sections being exceptionally well patronised. The sheep pens were not up to the standard of previous shows, however, and as has been • the case else where in recent years, practically no dogs came forward. The dairy produce and baking sections received excellent support from the women of the district and exhibits of high qualty came before the notice of the judge, whose task was no light one. The competitions' section, as is usually the case, attracted the greatest amount of attention, and a good programme was productive of excellent sport. The terraces surrounding the main ground were well filled when, about the middle of the afternoon, the grand parade was held. Led by the Palmerston Highland Pipe Band, which provided welcome musical selections during the day, the successful competitors circled the parade ground and were drawn up before the main terrace. Unfortunately the parade was drawn up in rather too close formation, with the result that the spectators were not afforded the best possible view of the exhibits. SHEEP The sheep pens provided some good competition, but the entries on the whole could have been considerably better. In the Corriedale classes the Bushey Park Estate carried off all the honours, including both championships. The four-tooth ram which secured the ribbon was an animal of good constitution and excellent conformation, and was in every way a fine example of the breed, carrying a very fine fleece. The two-tooth rams all showed excellent promise for the future, the one placed first in its class coming very close to the champion. No aged ewes were forward, and the championship went to "a two-tooth of outstanding quality in wool and conformation. The ram lambs were also a good entry. Mr John Chisholm had no competition to meet in the Border Leicester classes, and he carried off all the prizes. All were shown in good condition and were worthy of the awards secured. Mr J. Preston was the only exhibitor of English Leicesters, and in this class also the quality was all that could be desired. There were only two competitors in the Romney Marsh section, Mr D. Ireland securing the principal awards. The champions were both fine animals and all the entries carried good fleeces. Messrs Ireland and David Ross again had the field to themselves in the crossbred section, the entry being well up to standard. The stock was, however, showing evidence of the effect of the dry season, but was presented in a manner that was a distinct credit to the exhibitors.

The Bushey Park Estate was well to the fore in the Southdown section, gaining the ram championship with'an excellent four-tooth beast and the ewe championship with one of similar age. Messrs G. D. Pa,yne and D. _ Ireland also brought forward some creditable entries. The fat sheep were also inclined to show the effects_ of the dry weather, but were good entries in every way, being shown to the best effect and presenting some keen competition. CATTLE There was a good entry in the Ayrshire classes, and competition was strong. Mr P. Walker secured the female championship with a four-year-old cow which was fit to be shown in any ring. Both this and the other cowa forward were of good milking quality. The champion bull was exhibited by Mr D. Ireland, and it was easily the most outstanding male in the section. It went before the judge with an unbeaten record and was again adjudged the best of the entry. Though there was not a large number of Jerseys forward, there was some excellent quality in the entry. The champion was well ahead of the others in the competition, exhibiting good milking quality. Some of the others appeared to lack condition, probably on account of the adverse season. The only male entry was a yearling bull exhibited by Mr R. A. Paulin, and the judge had no hesitation in awarding the championship ribbon to this animal.

Mr D. J. Ross met with little competition in the Shorthorn section, and secured both championships. His entries were all excellent cattle, and earned the full approval of the judge. Mr J. Payne was the most successful competitor in the Friesiari classes, taking four first places. HORSES The draught section was particularly strong, and competition throughout was keen." Mr R. T. Duthie secured the entire championship with a three-year-old of exceptional quality, well up to size. The judge expressed the opinion that this animal was the best entire he had seen at any show for a number of years. The colts were all shown well, without including anything of an outstanding nature, but the brood mare, exhibited by Mrs E. Bannatyne, was a remarkable beast, securing first place in that section and also in the class for mares with two progeny, as well as taking the championship. Her character was well borne out by the fact that her two progeny also secured first places. The young fillies were all good quality animals, and the judge had a difficult task to decide upon the placings. Some excellent working horses were included in the entry of two-year-old geldings, and both the light and heavy spring-carters were of a high quality.

The judge remarked that it was unfortunate that no working teams were forward from the district as competition in this class offered some inducement to young teamsters to keep their animals up to standard. Thoroughbreds, hacks, and ponies were forward in good numbers and quality, and these classes and the competitions were both well supported and interesting.
