BAKING OF BREAD
QUESTION'OF NIGHT WORK DEPUTATION TO MINISTER (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 23. A deputation from the New Zealand Federated Bakers and Pastrycooks' Union of Workers waited on the Minister of Labour (Mr H. T. Armstrong) to-day to urge on the Government the desirability of bringing down legislation to eliminate the present system of night baking. . The deputation contended that the only way of getting uniformity in the matter was to have instituted by law prescribed hours between which the process of the manufacture of bread should be carried out. Illustrations were quoted to show that in Australia and some Continental countries this was already in operation, and they saw no reason why New Zealand should be behind other countries. New Zealand, it was pointed out, led the world at one time in social and industrial legislation, and it was hoped that she would once more show how this muchneeded reform could be brought 'into operation. The Minister said he would give the matter earnest consideration, and would, no doubt, 'bring the question before Cabinet so that a Bill could be drafted embodying legislation along the lines asked for.
The deputation consisted of Messrs E. J. Watson (Auckland), F. Mawhinny (Wellington), and P. Neilson, M.P. for Dunedin Central, who introduced thY deputation and who also acted for tho, Dunedin Union.
Mr Neilson thanked the Minister for the sympathetic hearing he had given th» representations.
