NOTES ON-THE RACING (From Our Special Reporter) WELLINGTON. January 23. The Wellington Cup meeting Was opened in fine but dull and threatening weather. Only a few mild showers fell, but were not particularly noticeable. The track carried a good sole of gross, and the going could not be regarded as an assistance to record making, but nevertheless some smart gallops were recorded. The real interest in the day did not commence until the field for the Wellington Cup entered the birdcage. The full card went to the post. Cuddle was sent to the front and asked to adopt what really amounted to suicidal tactics by being sent out to win all the way. She was anchored by weight at the finish. Silver Rinc was always fairly well placed, but had no chance of giving the big margin of weight to Queen of Song. The winner was always nicely placed in fourth or fifth position right through the running, and when heads were straightened for home she was ridden to the front and won all out. The only horse that might have beaten- her was Kinnoull, who did not get too good a run after starting from the extreme outside at the rise of the barrier. Cuddle was asked to do too much arid finally drifted right out. Lowcnberg, who held a chance on paper through Kinnoull, was never in the picture. Sweet Agnes lost her place apparently through interference, and the best performance of the defeated lot was put up by Argentic. He began well, but then drifted backlo third last. He then stayed on to finish, close to the placed Copyist, Great Star, and Silver Streak, with Acceptable, were the early leaders in the Telegraph Handicap. Bon Tray was also with them in the line for home. Acceptable just won and no more trom Silver Streak, who finished a length in front of Princess Doreen. Copyist faded into fourth place, and Great Star also faded. Variant's number was hoisted as the winner, but the mistake was rectified. The early leaders all failed to carry on at the hot pace. Full Throttle outstayed them in the Anniversary Handicap. Plato looked a winner all the way, but faded, and no excuse could be offered for the others.
