RUSSIAN TRADE
INCREASE IN IMPORTS IMPROVED FINANCIAL POSITION (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) MOSCOW, January 9. Indications arc that Russian belts will no longer need to be tighter ed as during the lean years when huge supplies of foodstuffs were exported in order to obtain foreign exchange for the payment of imported machinery. Big cargoes received in .he past fortnight, cited as being the beginning of a new era, include lb 000 barrels of Dutch herrings, 40 tons of Guatemala coffee, 50 tons of Ceylon tea, and 25,000 cases of Java oranges. It is explained that imports of raw materials, semifinished products, and consumers’ goods will now largely replace the former imp( rto of machines and tools. The impruving economic position will reopen the Russian market to many commodities.
