A RETROSPECTIVE PAYMENT

4 WORK ON LABOUR DAY

A retrospective payment totalling £2BOO affecting 4450 men has been authorised by the Minister of Employment, Mr R. Semple, on behalf of the relief workers who were engaged on public works on Labour Day. The position is that permanent employees were paid for the holiday, but the relief workers were not. Mr Semple also indicated that he proposed shortly to wipe out the discrimination between Maoris and pakehas engaged on relief work on public works. He also said that in future no tent rental would be charged by the Public Works Department for married men who had their wives with them.
